King Charles declines Prince ceremony for William – Find out why
As Charles navigates his health challenges, Prince William has stepped in to fulfill key royal duties. According to royal insiders, William and his team have already begun preparing for his eventual ascension to the throne.
“The palace sprung into action,” a source told US Weekly. “William and his team have agreed on what they will focus on at the start of his reign and funeral plans for his father. For the most part, Charles is doing well. However, there are ‘some concerns, and he knows his reign will be up soon.’”
Sally Bedell Smith, a royal commentator, highlighted how Charles’ health has accelerated William’s preparation for his future role:
“Although the King is carrying out his duties with typical determination, he has had to accept limitations during his cancer treatment. As a result, William has been taking on more responsibilities, and he and Kate have been preparing for their future roles sooner than they would have expected.”
Tensions between Charles and William
Despite William’s increased responsibilities, reports suggest that the relationship between him and his father has shifted in recent months. According to US Weekly, Charles’ reluctance to abdicate has created occasional tension.
One source revealed:
“Charles has wanted to be the monarch for decades. Even though he’s battling cancer, he’s not letting that get in the way of his desire to be successful on the throne or a dynamic leader.”
At the same time, William reportedly takes his role as heir very seriously:
“Like his father, he takes being a success in the royal role very seriously,” an insider shared.
A new approach to the Prince of Wales title
One key decision King Charles made for William concerned the title of Prince of Wales. Unlike his own controversial installment in 1969, Charles opted not to hold a formal ceremony when William received the title.
Welsh journalist Huw Thomas explained that Charles found his own experience as Prince of Wales politically charged and uncomfortable. Speaking to The Sun, Thomas said:
“It was known that [Charles] didn’t enjoy that experience, it was known that he felt he was being used in this big political, theatrical moment… He made it clear he didn’t want that to happen again.”
Instead, William was quietly named Prince of Wales shortly after Charles became king. However, experts believe the title will remain an important tradition in the monarchy.
“I’d be stunned if [the title] disappeared, only because the monarchy is built on tradition,” Thomas continued. “History tells us [the royals] stick to tradition… I’d be surprised if, in the future, William thought, ‘No, I’m going to ditch this one.’”
Should Charles abdicate?
As King Charles continues his cancer treatment into 2025, questions about his reign persist. Royal insiders suggest the king has privately accepted that his time on the throne may be limited.
“He’s a lot weaker and tires easily, and doctors are begging him to slow down,” a source told Woman’s Day. “Cancer has changed him, made him reassess what’s important… Stepping aside could give him more time with Camilla.”
However, Charles remains determined to serve as long as possible. As royal expert Jennie Bond noted, Charles is handling his responsibilities with admirable determination. Still, it is clear that William is being prepared for the day he takes the throne—whenever that may come.
The future of the monarchy is evolving, with Prince William stepping up while King Charles continues his health battle. While some argue Charles should abdicate, others believe he has earned the right to serve as king, even if his reign is shorter than expected.
