The Statler Brothers’ journey began with a name change. Originally called “The Kingsmen,” the group realized they needed a new name when another band hit the charts with the song “Louie Louie.” As fate would have it, a box of Statler tissues in their hotel room caught their attention, and the Statler Brothers were born. They joked that they could have just as easily been called the “Kleenex Brothers,” but the Statler name stuck, and it became part of music history.

The Statler Brothers’ musical style blended country and gospel, setting them apart from other groups of the time. When Johnny Cash discovered them, he was at the height of his career, and their partnership gave the Statler Brothers the exposure they needed. Fortune explained that each name on the wall represented a story, a life lost, and that realization deeply moved him to write the song.
Over the years, the Statler Brothers released more than 40 albums and earned numerous accolades, including being named the Country Music Association’s Vocal Group of the Year nine times. They also hosted their own variety show on The Nashville Network, which became one of the highest-rated programs in the channel’s history.
In 2020, founding member Harold Reid passed away after battling kidney failure, marking the end of an era. The Statler Brothers’ legacy, however, lives on through their music, which continues to resonate with fans old and new.
