Mia Love, first Black Republican woman in Congress, dies at 49

Trailblazing former congresswoman remembered for breaking barriers and inspiring hope across political lines.

Mia Love, the first Black Republican woman elected to the U.S. Congress, has passed away at age 49 following a courageous battle with brain cancer. Her family confirmed she died peacefully at home on Sunday, March 23, surrounded by loved ones.

In 2014, Mia Love made history when she was elected to represent Utah’s 4th Congressional District, becoming the first Black woman from the Republican Party to serve in Congress. Her journey into politics began in a small town—Saratoga Springs, Utah—where she took action on a local mosquito problem. That moment sparked a political career that would break ceilings and open doors for future generations.

Love’s time in Congress was marked by her willingness to challenge the norms. She became the only Republican member of the Congressional Black Caucus during her tenure, working alongside other Black lawmakers to push for equal opportunities and justice for marginalized communities.

Her final battle: glioblastoma

In 2022, Love was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive and rare form of brain cancer. According to the MD Anderson Cancer Center, most people diagnosed with glioblastoma survive 18 to 24 months. Fewer than 10% live more than five years.

Despite her diagnosis, Love remained resilient and private. Her family shared a heartfelt message on her social media following her passing:
“With grateful hearts filled to overflowing for the profound influence of Mia on our lives… she passed away peacefully today.”
The post went on to describe how, in death, she “soared heavenward” just as her words and vision often did in life.

From Congress to commentary

After narrowly losing her re-election bid in 2018—by less than one percentage point—Love continued to shape political discourse as a political commentator on CNN. She brought a unique and often underrepresented perspective to mainstream political conversations, especially on issues involving race, immigration, and identity within the Republican Party.

Her voice, both strong and compassionate, challenged party lines and inspired meaningful dialogue.

Remembering Mia: tributes and impact

Mia Love’s legacy resonates beyond politics. She was a daughter of Haitian immigrants, a mother, a wife, and a symbol of hope for many Americans—especially young Black women seeking representation in spaces where they have long been absent.

Social media flooded with tributes following the news of her death.
One supporter wrote: “Mia Love made me believe that people like me could stand in Congress one day. She made history and did it with grace.”
Another said: “You didn’t have to agree with her politics to admire her strength.”

A legacy of courage and conviction

Mia Love’s story is one of determination, faith, and fearless leadership. She entered politics to solve a local problem and ended up changing American history. Her life serves as a reminder that courage, not conformity, creates change.

As the nation reflects on her life and legacy, Love’s impact continues to inspire a new generation of leaders willing to stand boldly for what they believe in.

Rest in peace, Mia Love—your voice, vision, and values will not be forgotten.
