New homeowner discovers snake infestation after dog acts strangely in Colorado house

Single mom finds her dream home in Centennial—until her pet uncovers slithering intruders hidden in the walls

A Colorado mother thought she’d found the perfect home for her family—until her dog led her to a disturbing discovery: snakes living inside the walls. Ten have been removed so far, and experts believe they may have been there for years.

Amber Hall was thrilled when she closed on her first home—a four-bedroom, two-bathroom property in Centennial, Colorado. After weeks of searching, she found a house with enough space for her two kids and two dogs, along with a yard perfect for family life.

But just days after moving in, things took a turn she never expected.

An unsettling discovery

While unpacking, Amber noticed her dog behaving oddly—crouching low and moving cautiously toward a wall near the door to the garage.

“I thought it was a spider or something,” she told KOAA. “But then I saw snakes slither up the wall. I panicked.”

Two snakes were visible at first. When she placed her hand higher on the wall, she felt warmth—suggesting more hidden inside.

Since then, Amber has found ten snakes in her home.

Expert says some snakes may have lived there for years

The creatures appear to be an unusually large type of garter snake, although experts have noted their size is atypical. A professional snake wrangler has been helping remove them, estimating that some may have been living in the house for up to two years.

“I can’t unpack. I’m afraid there are snakes in the boxes,” Amber said. “You go to bed and if the sheet brushes your foot, you jump out.”

At 42, Amber says this house was supposed to be a milestone—something she worked her whole life for.

“I don’t feel like I’m the first one to find them,” she said. “But I don’t think anybody would admit they knew.”

Now, she’s spent about $1,000 on removal efforts and is considering tearing up concrete to locate the source.

Amber and her children are living in fear, unable to settle into their new space. What was meant to be a fresh start has turned into daily anxiety.

“This is my first home. And I can’t enjoy it. My kids can’t enjoy it. I’m scared to death,” she said.

What would you do in Amber’s situation?

Snake infestations are rare but serious. For this mom, what should have been a new beginning has become a stressful ordeal.
