NFL star shares heartbreaking news of young daughter’s death
NFL player mourns loss of 23-month-old daughter in emotional announcement
Charvarius Ward, a cornerback for the San Francisco 49ers, is grieving the heartbreaking loss of his daughter, Amani Joy, who passed away just shy of her second birthday. Ward and his partner, Monique Cook, have shared touching memories of Amani, describing her as a source of strength, joy, and love in their lives.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Ward spoke of the impact Amani had on their family, saying, “She taught us to have patience, trust, and a positive outlook on life. She showed us true strength and bravery. She overcame adversity at a young age and was always happy, lighting up every room with her smile.”
He also shared how being her father has deepened his appreciation for patience and resilience.

Amani was born with Down syndrome and a heart defect, and her journey was one of incredible strength. Diagnosed while still in the womb, she underwent surgery at only a few months old. Earlier this year, in honor of World Down Syndrome Day, Ward posted about the unique blessings of being Amani’s dad, celebrating her life and his growth as a father. He said that what he once viewed as a limitation had become a “gift from God.”
The 49ers organization extended their condolences, calling Amani “pure happiness,” and shared that her joy had touched everyone around her. This loss deeply affects not only Ward and his family but also the entire team.
