Obama honors veterans with heartfelt surprise aboard Honor Flight to Washington, DC
Former president gives Korean and Vietnam War veterans a special Veterans Day welcome they’ll never forget
Veterans traveling to Washington, DC, for Veterans Day were greeted by an unexpected and emotional surprise: former President Barack Obama personally thanked them for their service aboard their Honor Flight.
On Tuesday, November 11, a plane carrying Korean and Vietnam War veterans landed in Washington, DC, as part of the Honor Flight Network’s Veterans Day tribute. But this wasn’t just any welcome.
As the veterans arrived from Madison, Wisconsin, they were greeted by none other than former President Barack Obama, who stepped onboard to deliver a powerful and heartfelt message over the intercom.
“Thank you for your extraordinary service,” Obama said. “The sacrifices that all of you made to protect our country will always be honored.”
The moment took the entire plane by surprise. Veterans, some moved to tears, were visibly touched by the former president’s gesture.
What is the Honor Flight Network?
The Honor Flight Network is a nonprofit group that helps veterans visit the nation’s capital—many for the first time—to see the war memorials built in their honor. The program is completely free for veterans and has brought more than 300,000 heroes to Washington over the past two decades.

These trips are more than just sightseeing. They give veterans a chance to:
- Reconnect with fellow service members
- Reflect on their military service
- Honor fallen comrades
- Share their stories with new generations
“Veterans always travel free of charge, thanks to generous donations,” the organization states.
Obama shares his gratitude—and a token of appreciation
Following the visit, President Obama shared his reflections on Medium and social media. He described the experience as a great privilege, writing:
“Ahead of Veterans Day, I was honored to welcome a flight of veterans and their families as they arrived in Washington, DC. To all those who bravely served our country—thank you.”
He also presented the veterans with his Presidential Challenge Coin, a symbol of gratitude that he began giving out during his presidency.
“It’s a memento for those who have served our country or their communities,” Obama explained.
Reactions from veterans and supporters
The surprise left a lasting impression not only on the veterans but also on their families and the public. Social media users praised the moment, calling it “heartwarming” and “a beautiful way to honor our heroes.”
Many commented on how meaningful it was to see a former president take time to personally thank those who served—especially veterans of often-overlooked wars like Korea and Vietnam.
In a world that moves fast, moments like this remind us to slow down and show gratitude. These veterans made sacrifices decades ago, yet their courage and commitment continue to shape our nation.
As Obama said, “The sacrifices that all of you have made will be honored—today and every day.”
Let’s carry that message forward: honor the past, appreciate the present, and never forget those who serve.
Know a veteran? Take a moment today to thank them. And if you were touched by this story, share it to help keep their legacy alive.
