Prince William worried Prince Harry was ‘blindsided by love’ in his romance with Meghan Markle
A glimpse into Prince William's concerns during Harry and Meghan's early relationship
When Prince Harry introduced Meghan Markle to his older brother Prince William, things seemed warm and friendly at first. William was happy to meet her, admiring how she’d brought joy to Harry’s life. But beneath the smiles, the story of Meghan’s arrival in the royal family wasn’t as simple as it seemed.
According to authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, who wrote about this in Finding Freedom, William soon grew concerned, advising Harry to slow down. William’s caution wasn’t about Meghan herself but rather about Harry making sure he wasn’t rushing into something too quickly.
Harry, however, felt differently. When William suggested he take his time getting to know Meghan, Harry reportedly felt frustrated, feeling like his brother was being dismissive. Their disagreements deepened as William grew wary of what he saw as Meghan’s drive to build her public image, worried it might not always align with the family’s traditions.
Their first meeting was a positive one, with William jokingly telling Meghan he was excited to meet the woman who’d made Harry so happy. But as Harry and Meghan’s relationship progressed, William couldn’t shake the feeling that they might be moving too fast. He advised Harry to take things slow, but Harry felt his brother was not supportive enough.
Meanwhile, Meghan’s relationship with Kate Middleton, William’s wife, was also complex. The two never became close friends, something Meghan reportedly felt was a missed opportunity, especially when she faced harsh criticism from the press. Their relationship grew especially tense after a disagreement about a bridesmaid dress for Meghan’s wedding to Harry, which left both women feeling misunderstood.
According to Harry’s memoir Spare, Meghan tried to solve the issue by suggesting Kate visit a tailor to alter the dress. But Kate, who was worried about her daughter Charlotte’s discomfort, was reluctant. Their differences seemed to reflect deeper challenges in Meghan’s adjustment to royal life.
When Harry and Meghan decided to step down from their royal roles, this decision made the relationships between them and the rest of the royal family more strained. However, recent reports suggest that despite their differences, Harry and Meghan reached out to Kate with words of comfort after she revealed her recent health concerns.
What do you think? Did William’s caution come from a place of genuine concern, or did it stem from a misunderstanding of Meghan’s background and goals? Do you believe Meghan and Kate’s relationship could have been stronger? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
