Queen Elizabeth’s four-word response after learning her time was limited
Former royal butler reveals late monarch’s private reaction to her terminal diagnosis as new details about her final months emerge
Queen Elizabeth II reportedly responded with four simple words after being told she was nearing the end of her life, according to her longtime butler Paul Burrell. The late monarch, who reigned for more than 70 years, is said to have expressed determination to live long enough to mark her Platinum Jubilee before passing away in September 2022.
Queen Elizabeth died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on September 8, 2022, at the age of 96. The official announcement from Buckingham Palace described her passing as peaceful. Her eldest son Charles immediately became King.

In the months following her death, reports began to emerge suggesting that the Queen had been privately battling bone marrow cancer, a condition that left her increasingly frail. Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson later wrote in his memoir that he had been aware of her diagnosis, while royal biographer Robert Jobson noted that her health declined rapidly after her Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
“She struggled terribly with her eyesight and even had difficulty lifting a teapot,” Jobson wrote, citing those close to the Queen who described her growing frustration at losing independence in everyday tasks.
“Well that’s a shame” – the Queen’s reaction to her prognosis
Paul Burrell, who served the royal household for decades, recently shared his memories of the Queen’s final months. He recalled that doctors initially told her she was unlikely to live past Christmas 2021.

Her reaction, according to Burrell, was brief but telling: “Well that’s a shame.” Despite the prognosis, she reportedly asked her doctors if they could help her survive long enough to witness her Platinum Jubilee the following summer.
“Can you keep me alive for that?” she is said to have asked, determined to take part in the historic event marking 70 years on the throne.
Adjusting her life to hold on for the Jubilee
Burrell explained that the Queen made lifestyle changes to extend her time. She gave up her favorite gin-based drinks and instead followed her doctors’ strict guidance, switching to apple juice and occasionally tomato juice. She also endured blood transfusions to maintain her strength.

Her efforts were rewarded—she lived to see and participate in her Platinum Jubilee in June 2022, which brought crowds across the UK together in celebration of her historic reign.
Queen Elizabeth’s passing closed a chapter in British history, but her determination to fulfill her final public duty remains part of how she is remembered.
King Charles described her death as a moment of “greatest sadness” for the royal family, and tributes poured in from across the world, reflecting her deep connection to people far beyond the United Kingdom.
