Authorities suspect 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie was taken from her bed as the search intensifies
Savannah Guthrie’s 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, is missing—and police believe she may have been kidnapped from her Tucson home while she slept.
The story has shocked fans of Today Show host Savannah Guthrie and raised alarm across Arizona. Nancy Guthrie, who is in poor physical health and unable to walk more than 50 yards alone, vanished late Saturday night or early Sunday morning from her upscale home in the Catalina Foothills near Tucson.
Authorities now believe she was abducted from her bed—a rare and chilling scenario.
“This doesn’t happen,” said Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos. “I can’t think of the last time an 84-year-old disappeared from their own bed in the middle of the night.”
Nancy had dinner with family, including her daughter Annie Guthrie, on the evening of January 31. Annie told police there were “no red flags” during their time together. Nancy was dropped off at home between 9:30 and 9:45 p.m., just hours before she went missing.
She was officially reported missing the next day, after failing to show up for church—something that worried her family immediately.
Nancy’s car, wallet, and phone were all left behind, and she relies on life-saving medications she didn’t take with her. Investigators also found DNA evidence inside the home, which is now being tested in a Phoenix lab. While the results are pending, the presence of forensic material adds to suspicions of an abduction.
Multiple law enforcement teams are now involved, including drone units, search dogs, Border Patrol, and even homicide detectives, which is unusual for a missing persons case.
Sheriff Nanos said the community has responded with volunteers and prayers, but time is running out.
“She has been missing for almost 48 hours, and timing is very critical. The longer this goes on, the more danger she faces,” he said.
Savannah Guthrie asks for prayers
Savannah Guthrie did not appear on Monday’s broadcast of the Today Show, but she broke her silence on Instagram, asking the public for spiritual support.
“We believe in prayer… in hope… in humanity,” she wrote.
“Please pray… for our beloved mom, our dearest Nancy.”
She described Nancy as a “woman of deep conviction, a good and faithful servant.”
The emotional message was met with thousands of comments from friends, fans, and colleagues offering prayers and support.
Neighbors have been asked to review security camera footage, and authorities are urging anyone with tips to come forward immediately.
Nancy Guthrie is described as mentally sharp and fully aware, but her limited mobility and dependence on medication put her at serious risk—especially with cold winter nights in the desert.
The case has taken on national attention, not just because of Savannah Guthrie’s fame, but because of the sheer mystery and danger surrounding the incident.
