Skateboarders hailed as heroes after saving woman from danger in Calgary
Teens honored with Chief’s Award for Bravery after stepping in to stop a possible assault
Four teenage skateboarders from Calgary are being celebrated for their heroic actions after they stepped in to protect a woman from a potentially dangerous situation in downtown Calgary. Their brave response earned them one of the city’s highest civilian honors.
Back in April 2015, what started as a normal night of skateboarding took a serious turn for Kyle Tenove, Warren Churchill, Clay Stein, and Josh Hunter. The four teens were riding through downtown Calgary when they noticed a woman who appeared to be in distress.
The woman, who was visibly intoxicated, was being followed and harassed by a man trying to lead her into an alley. Alarmed by what they were witnessing, the skateboarders didn’t look the other way. Instead, they acted.

The teens quickly confronted the man, creating distance between him and the woman. Their presence alone was enough to scare him off—he took off running. But the skateboarders didn’t stop there. They stayed with the woman, ensuring she was safe and comforted until police arrived.
Authorities later said the teens’ quick thinking may have prevented something far worse from happening that night.
“It’s incredible to see that kind of maturity and care from such young people,” a police official commented. “They didn’t think twice. They just knew someone needed help.”
Honored with the Chief’s Award for Bravery
A year later, the Calgary Police Service formally recognized the young men’s actions. They were awarded the Chief’s Award for Bravery—an honor reserved for civilians who show extraordinary courage and selflessness.
The ceremony served as a powerful moment not just for the teens, but for the entire community. It highlighted how ordinary people can make an extraordinary difference.
The Calgary Police hope their story will inspire others to act when they see someone in danger.
“Too often, people assume someone else will help,” one officer noted. “But these young men are proof that each of us can be that someone.”
In the end, the four skateboarders weren’t just in the right place at the right time—they made the right choice. Their bravery continues to inspire, serving as a powerful example of how we all have the ability to protect and care for one another.
