Student who tore out her own eyes while high says she has ‘no regrets’ after being fired from job
Kaylee Muthart lost her eyesight in a tragic drug episode but says she’s found peace and purpose—even after losing her job for feeding stray kittens.
A South Carolina woman who made headlines after blinding herself during a drug-induced psychosis says she has “no regrets” after recently being fired for feeding hungry stray kittens.
In 2018, Kaylee Muthart was just 20 years old when she experienced a severe psychotic episode after using crystal meth. At the time, she believed she had to sacrifice her eyesight to save the world. In a terrifying moment outside a church, she pulled out both her eyes with her bare hands.
Despite the trauma, Kaylee survived. She overcame her drug addiction and began rebuilding her life. She even got a job washing dishes at a local restaurant while working toward completing her education.
Recently, however, Kaylee was let go from her job. The reason? She had been sneaking food out of the restaurant to feed a stray cat and her eight kittens.

Kaylee told The Mirror that her boss had asked her to stop, but she couldn’t bring herself to leave the animals hungry. “I gave it my meal that I would get for my shift—and ordered it especially for the kitty,” she explained.
Even though being fired was difficult, she stood by her actions. “I could walk away knowing I did what I believed in my heart was right,” she said. “It was hard on me to lose that job, but I would not have been able to sleep at night if I didn’t do what I felt was right.”
Now 27, Kaylee wears prosthetic eyes and says she feels happier and more peaceful than she did before going blind. “Of course, there are times when I get really upset about my situation… but truthfully, I’m happier now than I was before all this happened,” she shared. “I’d rather be blind than dependent on drugs.”
