Teen who worked at Burger King after graduation receives $230,000 in donations
A Georgia graduate’s quiet dedication captured hearts online, sparking a viral fundraiser for his education
Just hours after graduating from high school, 18-year-old Mykale Baker was back at his Burger King job helping during the late-night rush — a choice that has since inspired more than $230,000 in donations toward his future.
On May 21, after picking up his diploma from Mills Creek High School in Georgia, Mykale celebrated with his mother and grandmother at the Burger King where he had worked for more than a year.
But instead of joining his classmates at parties, Baker noticed the restaurant was short-staffed and quickly stepped in — still wearing his graduation stole and medals. Gloves on, he started flipping burgers and bagging fries, determined to help his team get through the night.
He had no idea his decision would soon change his life.
A stranger takes notice
Maria Mendoza, who had stopped by the restaurant with her daughter, saw Baker working proudly in his gown.
“He was so kind, so polite. Radiating joy, even after such a big day,” Mendoza told 11 Alive. “His dedication and quiet strength really moved me.”
She filmed a short video of him cooking at the grill and posted it to TikTok with the caption: “TikTok, do your thing!”
The clip quickly spread, drawing more than 4.5 million views. While many viewers praised Baker’s work ethic, Mendoza wanted to do more than simply share his story.

From TikTok to GoFundMe
Mendoza launched a GoFundMe campaign with the goal of raising $60,000 for Baker’s education. Within days, contributions poured in, surpassing $230,000.
“He didn’t do it for attention. He doesn’t even know his story went viral,” Mendoza wrote on the fundraiser page. “But thousands of people were moved by his dedication, humility, and work ethic.”
Funds raised will go toward tuition, books, and other educational needs.
A surprise gift and new opportunities
When Mendoza first returned to Burger King to surprise Baker with the initial $6,000 raised, the teen was overcome with emotion.
“I was thinking of taking a gap year because I didn’t have money for school,” Baker said in a video message. “But thank you to all of you. Now, I might actually go straight to technical college.”
His sister, Mycah, told the New York Post: “He’s always done these things without a lot of people seeing it. It’s something that comes naturally to him.”
Burger King’s own foundation has since added a $10,000 scholarship, further ensuring his education is within reach.
For Baker, who was raised by a single mother and is the youngest of eight children, the overwhelming support has been life-changing.
Fighting back tears, he told supporters: “I never thought this would happen to me. I’m very thankful.”
What began as a simple act of responsibility has turned into a story of community, generosity, and opportunity — a reminder that dedication, even when unseen, does not go unnoticed.
