He first appeared on-screen in a 1981 TV adaptation of A Christmas Carol and steadily built a reputation as a versatile and dependable actor. He appeared in TV staples like Cagney & Lacey, Law & Order, and NYPD Blue, but it was his role as the corrupt but charismatic Senator Clay Davis on The Wire that cemented his place in television history—especially his unforgettable delivery of the word “sheeeee-it,” which became a pop culture catchphrase.
