Trump denies dozing off in viral photo: “I’m not a sleeper”

After a viral photo showed Donald Trump with his eyes closed during a meeting, the president has fired back, insisting he doesn’t sleep much and remains fully engaged—even during late-night talks with world leaders.

A few weeks ago, images of Donald Trump seemingly nodding off in his chair during a press conference at the Oval Office lit up the internet. The photos, taken on November 6 during a briefing about a popular weight-loss drug, showed Trump with his eyes closed—leading many to believe he had briefly fallen asleep.

The incident quickly gained traction, especially since it came just minutes before another attendee fainted during the same event. It wasn’t the first time Trump was accused of dozing off in public; back in May, a video from a ceremony in Saudi Arabia also showed him with his eyes shut for an extended moment.

With critics raising concerns about whether the 79-year-old was up to the task of another presidency, the topic of Trump’s energy and awareness resurfaced once more.

Trump responds: “I don’t want to sleep”

During a November 18 press conference alongside Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Trump was asked how he manages his time—especially given his own remarks about the crown prince not sleeping much.

“He does not sleep much, and I don’t sleep much. I think we have the same schedule,” Trump said, as seen in a clip shared by Forbes. He added that the two leaders often speak at odd hours, saying, “We talk at night. We talk at the craziest times.”

Trump went on to contrast himself with President Joe Biden, whom he claimed sleeps “all the time.” Dismissing the viral photo, he insisted, “I’m not a sleeper.”

He concluded, “When you love your job, when you love your country, and when you’re in a position like we are… you’re thinking about your country. He thinks about his country. I think about my country. I don’t want to sleep.”

Online reactions range from amused to skeptical

Trump’s comments sparked a wide range of reactions online. Supporters praised his work ethic, while critics weren’t convinced. Some joked that even if he doesn’t want to sleep, his body seems to disagree.

“It’s not about whether you love your country—it’s about whether you’re alert and fit to lead,” one commenter wrote on Facebook. Another quipped, “Maybe he just closes his eyes to think deeply.”

Still, others saw the moment as relatable. “Let the man blink!” one post read. “We all get tired sometimes.”
