Tyler Perry has opened up about the legacy he hopes to leave behind, revealing an emotional wish for his 11-year-old son, Aman, and what he wants fans and actors to remember about him when he is gone.
The filmmaker and actor shared the deeply personal reflections during an interview on TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle on September 14, 2026, as he spoke about getting older, slowing down, and spending more time with his son.
During the interview, Perry was asked what he hoped his fans would take from him when the “curtains close,” acknowledging that life eventually ends for everyone.

Perry recalled that on his 50th birthday, he asked 50 friends to write letters describing what they thought of him, which his son will receive.
Perry said he has written the gift into his will.
I hope that every good thing that I give him, he could take and on my 50th birthday, I asked my 50 friends to write these letters telling me what they thought of me, and I had those letters put in a binder and for his 50th birthday, when I’m dead and gone. it’s written in the will that he will get it with a note that says, “Are you measuring up to what your father was to other people.
Tyler Perry plans to move to Puerto Rico
Further, the filmmaker announced that he intends to move to Puerto Rico by the end of 2027 and significantly scale back his workload.

I’m officially moving to Puerto Rico by the end of the year, and I’m pulling back a whole lot, Perry said.
He explained that getting older has changed his priorities and made him realize that it is time to slow down.
It’s like it’s time to slow down a little bit and spend time with my son and take it all in, he said.

He has currently listed his sprawling property for $57 million, according to reports.
The 24,592-square-foot mansion reportedly features nine bedrooms and 15 bathrooms and sits on approximately 22.5 gated acres.
