Trump and Zelenskyy clash in tense Oval Office meeting
Heated exchange unfolds as Trump accuses Ukrainian president of disrespecting the US
A fiery meeting between former US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Vice President JD Vance took place at the White House, with Trump accusing Zelenskyy of being disrespectful and gambling with World War III.
During their Oval Office meeting on February 28, Trump and Vance confronted Zelenskyy over Ukraine’s approach to US support in the ongoing war with Russia. Vance criticized Zelenskyy, stating that he should be more grateful to Trump, while Trump himself accused the Ukrainian leader of “disrespecting” the United States.
In a heated exchange, Zelenskyy emphasized that war brings difficulties to everyone, even if Americans do not currently feel its impact. Trump quickly interrupted, asserting that the Ukrainian president had no right to dictate how Americans should feel about the war.
“You’re in no position to dictate what we’re going to feel. We’re going to feel very good. We’re going to feel very good and very strong,” Trump said. “You’re gambling with the lives of millions of people! You’re gambling with World War Three! And what you’re doing is very disrespectful to this country.”
Zelenskyy and Trump respond on social media
Following the tense discussion, both leaders took to social media to share their perspectives.
Zelenskyy posted on Twitter (X), expressing gratitude for continued American support:
“Thank you, America. Thank you @POTUS, Congress, and the American people. Ukraine needs just and lasting peace, and we are working exactly for that.”
Meanwhile, Trump shared his thoughts on Truth Social, suggesting that Zelenskyy was not ready for peace as long as the US was involved:
“It’s amazing what comes out through emotion, and I have determined that President Zelensky is not ready for Peace if America is involved because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations. I don’t want advantage; I want PEACE. He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for Peace.”
Divided reactions
The meeting sparked intense reactions, with critics accusing Trump of being disrespectful to Ukraine’s leader, while his supporters praised his strong stance. One social media user reacted to the video by writing:
“Jesus F**king Christ! Watching Trump yell and demean the Ukrainian President is completely disrespectful. What a disgrace.”
With Ukraine still fighting against Russian aggression, the meeting underscored ongoing tensions over US support for the war effort. While Zelenskyy continues to seek international backing, Trump’s approach signals potential challenges ahead in US-Ukraine relations.
