Christa Pike Awake, Attorney Says She Is Angry and Confused
Christa Pike has reportedly woken up after surviving a botched lethal injection in Tennessee, with her attorney revealing that she is angry and confused about what happened.
Pike’s execution was halted after the state attempted to administer the lethal injection but was unable to complete the procedure.
Her attorney, Randy Spivey, said Pike was experiencing significant cognitive confusion after waking up and was trying to understand what had happened.
“I was not in the room when she woke up. I don’t want to speculate too much,” Spivey said.
According to the attorney, one of the first things Pike said after waking was, “Where am I, and who are you?”
Who did Christa Pike ask about when she woke up?
Spivey said Pike continued to display confusion as she tried to piece together what had happened and asked about several people, including members of her legal team and the victims’ family.
“There’s still a lot of cognitive confusion, and so I will say that she wanted to know what has happened and she has asked about several people,” he said.
The attorney said Pike appeared to be angry and confused about the events surrounding the attempted execution.
“I think she is angry and confused about everything right now,” Spivey said.
However, Spivey cautioned against drawing conclusions about exactly what Pike remembers from the failed execution.
“She is very aware that the state tried to execute her, and again I don’t want to say what she remembers and what she doesn’t remember at this point because I think that’s evolving and I want to be very careful on that,” he said.

Spivey added that Pike is nevertheless aware, to some extent, of what the state did to her.
“But she is very aware of what they did to her up to a point,” he said.
Christa Pike’s execution
Christa Pike was scheduled to be executed by lethal injection in Tennessee on October 1, 2026, for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a fellow student at the Job Corps training center in Knoxville.
Pike’s execution did not go as planned after medical personnel struggled to establish intravenous access. The lethal injection procedure was ultimately halted, leaving Pike alive and prompting the state to suspend the execution.
In the weeks leading up to the execution, Pike had reportedly spoken about her impending death, while her legal team continued efforts to stop the sentence from being carried out.
During the failed execution, Pike reportedly told members of the execution team, “I don’t have good veins,” according to an audio recording played in court.
Following the botched execution, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced that the state would halt its remaining scheduled executions for the rest of 2026. Gary Wayne Sutton, who had been scheduled to be executed on December 3, was among those affected.
