Kate Whiddon and her partner were overjoyed when they witnessed their 4-year-old son walking for the first time. For most children, this milestone might have been reached earlier, but their son’s situation is unique. The young boy, Camden, was born without arms or legs.
During her pregnancy, Kate discovered Camden’s condition when she was 18 weeks along. An ultrasound revealed that he had phocomelia, a rare birth defect where an individual does not develop one or more limbs. This made his first steps an incredibly emotional and significant moment for the family.
Following Camden’s diagnosis, Katie, a mother of three, was initially worried about her son’s ability to perform everyday tasks. She shared her concerns with PEOPLE, saying she wasn’t sure what to expect and questioned whether she would be able to provide enough support for him.
Camden, however, proved to be a resilient and inspirational child, determined not to let his disability hold him back. His courage and determination continue to impress and inspire those around him.
“When I first found out he wouldn’t have arms or legs, I thought that he would just be a vegetable … I didn’t know what to expect,” she told PEOPLE. “I had just turned 19 and I didn’t know, ‘Am I gonna be able to be good enough for him?’”
“When he was around 2 months old, I had him laying on my bed … I saw him out the corner of my eye and he was hitting the toys with his arms,” she said.
“I started to cry, I was just so happy and that confirmed that he was gonna be able to do things.”
A video capturing Camden’s first steps gained widespread attention on the internet. In the clip, he stands before Katie’s boyfriend, Cole Greene, who encourages him to walk. Camden’s sister cheers excitedly in the background. The determined little boy can be heard saying, “I’m coming to you. I’m walking!” as he gradually approaches Greene and his 3-year-old sister, Ryleigh.
The heartwarming scene demonstrates Camden’s unwavering spirit and ability to overcome any challenge in his way, inspiring countless people who have watched the video.
“We started crying, we were so proud,’ Whiddon told PEOPLE.
“I didn’t know when that day would come. I didn’t think he was ready for it yet and I was just so shocked and happy. It was so exciting and [his sister] Ryleigh was over there jumping, excited.”

Whiddon believes her son is destined for greatness and envisions him as a future motivational speaker.
