Former American Idol contestant Caleb Flynn broke down in court after a jury found him guilty of murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn, in Ohio.

Flynn, 40, a former music pastor, was convicted of killing Ashley, 37, who was a schoolteacher and volleyball coach.

The jury reached its verdict after deliberating for less than three hours following an eight-day trial.

Flynn was also found guilty of eight other charges, including aggravated murder and tampering with evidence. He is facing a life sentence without the possibility of parole and is scheduled to be sentenced on October 5.

Did Caleb Flynn kill his wife while she slept?

Prosecutors said Flynn fatally shot Ashley twice in the back of the head while she was sleeping at their home in Tipp City, a suburb of Dayton, on February 16, 2026.

After the shooting, Flynn allegedly attempted to convince investigators that intruders had entered the home and killed his wife.

During closing arguments, prosecutor Paul Watkins pointed to what he described as inconsistencies in Flynn’s account of what happened that night.

Watkins said Flynn initially told police he had been in his daughters’ bedroom when he heard gunshots.

He allegedly said he later discovered Ashley dead in their bedroom after noticing that the garage side door was open.

However, Watkins told jurors that Flynn later gave investigators a different account, saying he had not been to the garage.

Flynn’s gun, which had reportedly been kept in the center console of his truck, was also missing. Investigators found the truck’s centre console open.

Prosecutors presented texts from Flynn’s affair

A major part of the prosecution’s case centred on Flynn’s relationship with his former mistress, Alleigha Botner, whom he met while she was an intern at his church.

Botner, 24, testified for two days about their nearly 18-month relationship.

Prosecutors also presented some of the roughly 100,000 text messages exchanged between Flynn and Botner.

In one message sent in August 2025, Flynn allegedly wrote:

I was up until 4am last night crying, literally thinking of ways to kill her and not go to jail.

In another message, he wrote: “I just want her dead and gone.”

Botner told the court that she now hates Flynn because she believes he murdered his wife.

Prosecutors also played an AI-generated song that Flynn allegedly wrote and dedicated to Botner. The song’s lyrics were examined in court, with Botner explaining their meaning line by line.

Video showing the jury’s reaction to the song, including what appeared to be laughter, later went viral online.

Evidence from Flynn’s phone and Apple Watch

Prosecutors presented police body-camera footage as well as digital evidence from Flynn’s iPhone and Apple Watch.

Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations special agent Joseph Wilhelm testified that several applications had been uninstalled from Flynn’s phone before Ashley’s death.

Among them were Instagram and an AI music-generation application that Wilhelm said was connected to Flynn’s relationship with Botner.

The defence called no witnesses.

Flynn’s lawyer, Patrick Mulligan, argued that prosecutors had failed to provide concrete evidence directly linking his client to the murder.

Connecting a couple of meaningless dots doesn’t solve the case, Mulligan told the court.

He also argued that Flynn’s infidelity should not be treated as evidence that he killed his wife.

They can’t find the gun, therefore they blame it on him?

Mulligan questioned while addressing the tampering-with-evidence charge.

Caleb Flynn in American Idol

Before his murder conviction, Flynn was known by some viewers for appearing on American Idol in 2013.

He auditioned during the show’s 12th season in front of judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Randy Jackson.

Flynn received a golden ticket to Hollywood but did not make it to the show’s main competition.

In footage shown on the programme, Flynn spoke about his passion for music.

Music is all I know, it’s what I live to do and I love to sing, so that’s why I auditioned, he said.

He also suggested that his wife had encouraged him to audition.

Years later, Flynn’s wife would become the victim at the centre of his murder trial.
