Dick Van Dyke has spent more than 70 years bringing joy to audiences through timeless classics like Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and The Dick Van Dyke Show. But now, at 99 years old, the Hollywood icon is reflecting on the quiet challenges that come with living nearly a century.

In a personal essay written for The Times, Van Dyke admitted that while he’s often praised for his cheerful spirit, his age has brought feelings of sadness, frustration, and loneliness.

“It’s frustrating to feel diminished in the world, physically and socially,” he wrote.

Though he once danced across movie sets and stages, the Emmy and Tony Award winner now spends most of his days at home in California, finding travel too exhausting to manage.

Van Dyke also opened up about how today’s troubling news affects his outlook.

“Recent and unfolding current events could turn anyone sour and dark,” he confessed. “I just lived through two Southern California wildfires in less than a month.”

The actor, who’s been outspoken on political issues in the past, said the state of the world often leaves him feeling disheartened.

“Daily, I spiral into anguish over the mayhem and cruelty being inflicted on the entire world by those in power,” he wrote, admitting, “I am the grumpy old man who yells at the TV.”

The pain of outliving those you love

One of the most touching parts of Van Dyke’s message was his honesty about loneliness. He’s outlived almost all of his closest friends and loved ones, including his first wife, Margie Willett, and longtime partner Michelle Triola.

“Every single one of my dearest lifelong friends is gone, which feels just as lonely as it sounds,” he shared.

Yet, even with these losses, he insists that sadness doesn’t define him.

Arlene keeps him young

Van Dyke credits his wife, Arlene Silver, 54, as the person who keeps him grounded and full of life.

“Without question, our ongoing romance is the most important reason I have not withered away into a hermetic grouch,” he wrote. “She makes me feel somewhere between two-thirds and three-quarters my age.”

Their relationship, filled with joy despite a 46-year age gap, continues to be a source of strength and happiness for the star.

Even with the aches and losses of old age, Van Dyke says he’s never let bitterness or grief consume him.

“No one is genetically miserable. We all have the capacity for a joyful life,” he wrote. “I’ve made it to 99 in no small part because I have stubbornly refused to give in to the bad stuff.”

Instead of retreating into sadness, Van Dyke sees life as a “giant playground”—a gift to be experienced fully, even as the pace slows down.

Just this year, Van Dyke won a Daytime Emmy Award for his guest role in Days of Our Lives, proving his talent and charm are still shining.

As his 100th birthday approaches, fans around the world are celebrating not just a milestone, but a man who reminds us all how to grow old with grace, humor, and heart.
