Jennifer Grey on the accident that changed everything – Why the Dirty Dancing star left Hollywood at 27
Decades after becoming a household name, Jennifer Grey reflects on fame, loss, and the medical battles that nearly ended her career.
Jennifer Grey was on the brink of superstardom after Dirty Dancing—but a fatal car accident just days before the film’s release sent her life in a different direction.
In 1987, Jennifer Grey was living in Ireland with actor Matthew Broderick when the pair were involved in a car crash that claimed the lives of a mother and her young daughter. Broderick, who was driving, was later charged with careless driving. While Grey wasn’t seriously injured, the emotional toll was lasting.
“The juxtaposition of that deep sorrow, the survivor’s guilt, and then being celebrated as the new big thing just didn’t jibe,” Grey later said in an interview with the Daily Mirror. Just as Dirty Dancing exploded into pop culture—selling over 1 million VHS copies and earning major awards for its music—Grey was wrestling with trauma.

Haunted by the accident, Grey chose to step back from Hollywood. At 27, she underwent a cosmetic procedure to help her regain control—but the surgery altered her appearance so drastically that casting offers dried up.
“It was the nose job from hell,” she told People. “I’ll always be this once-famous actress nobody recognizes because of a nose job.”
The loss of her recognizable face mirrored the emotional disconnection she felt from fame. “My ambition was never the same,” she said. “My head was never the same.”
More than two decades later, Grey re-emerged in the spotlight—and won Season 11 of Dancing with the Stars. The experience was transformative. “It’s like eating a delicious steak after being on a diet for 23 years,” she said.

But her return also came with a serious health warning. During routine medical screenings for the show, doctors found severe spinal issues and early-stage thyroid cancer.
“Her spine was actually literally falling off,” said spinal surgeon Dr. Robert Bray, Jr. A sudden fall, he warned, could have left her paralyzed. Grey underwent multiple surgeries, including one to stabilize her spine with a titanium plate and another to remove her thyroid before the cancer could spread.
Now in her 60s, Jennifer Grey is back to doing what she loves, appearing in films like Untogether, Red Oaks, and the documentary I Am Patrick Swayze. While her career took a turn few could have predicted, Grey says she finally feels at peace with her past—and herself.
