John Goodman reveals 200-pound weight loss—but fans express health concerns
The 73-year-old actor John Goodman has lost nearly 200 pounds after a long battle with weight, but his recent appearance at a movie premiere has sparked worry among fans about his health.
John Goodman, best known for his roles in The Big Lebowski and the sitcom Roseanne, recently showcased his dramatic weight loss at the premiere of the new Smurfs movie in Los Angeles. While many fans congratulated the actor on his accomplishment, others expressed concern about his noticeably thinner appearance, questioning whether the weight loss might have gone too far.
Goodman has publicly addressed his weight issues over the years, admitting that he previously reached nearly 400 pounds at his heaviest.
In a candid 2011 interview with David Letterman, Goodman confessed, “I’d get off Roseanne every spring, lose 60 pounds, then gain it back and more each year. It’s going to be an ongoing process for the rest of my life.”

Choosing health after addiction
In 2007, after addressing his alcohol addiction through rehab, Goodman committed to a healthier lifestyle. He enlisted personal trainer Mackie Shilstone, who helped tennis legend Serena Williams reach peak physical condition.
Together, they adopted a Mediterranean-style diet emphasizing fish, nuts, vegetables, fruits, and olive oil, coupled with regular exercise sessions five to six times per week.
By 2010, Goodman had lost over 100 pounds. In a 2016 ABC interview, he credited his success to breaking bad habits, stating, “I just stopped eating all the time. I was eating alcoholically.” He added, “I got tired of looking at myself. You’re shaving in the mirror, and you don’t want to look at yourself. It gets dangerous.”
In 2023, Goodman told Rolling Stone magazine he had reached a total weight loss of 200 pounds. He discovered boxing as a new passion, describing it as “just an hour, hour and a half of hitting mitts, hitting bags, learning footwork.”
Recent accident raises additional concerns
Earlier this year, Goodman faced another health setback when he fractured his hip in an accident on a movie set. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Goodman described slipping and falling while filming, resulting in emergency surgery at London’s Cleveland Clinic.
“I didn’t know I’d fractured it until we got X-rays,” Goodman explained. Though surgery was successful, he was sidelined for a month of recovery, describing the inactivity as “driving me nuts.”
Goodman’s appearance at the Smurfs premiere drew mixed reactions online. While some celebrated his achievement, others expressed concerns about his thinner, gaunt look.
One social media user commented, “He looks terribly gaunt. Not good.” Another added, “Unfortunately, when you lose significant weight in middle adulthood, you look unhealthy as your skin doesn’t have the collagen it needs to prevent sagging.”
Some even speculated Goodman might have used weight-loss drugs like Ozempic, though there is no evidence to support this claim.
Yet, others remained supportive, praising the actor’s determination. “He looks totally different. Great job to John,” wrote another fan.
John Goodman’s ongoing journey highlights the complexities surrounding dramatic weight loss, particularly later in life. While the actor clearly intends to improve his health, his story also raises important discussions about how appearance can reflect—or obscure—true well-being.
