Katie Piper reveals difficult decision to get prosthetic eye after ongoing health struggles

Katie Piper has decided to move forward with a prosthetic eye after nearly two decades of health complications following a 2008 acid attack. The presenter says this step represents hope but admits feeling anxious about the change.

Katie Piper, known for her advocacy and resilience following an acid attack in 2008, has reached a turning point in her health journey. After persistent eye problems, she recently announced her decision to try a prosthetic eye shell, marking the beginning of a significant new phase in her recovery.

Katie was just 24 when she was brutally attacked with sulphuric acid in a planned assault orchestrated by her former partner, Daniel Lynch, who is currently serving a life sentence. The attack severely damaged her face and left her facing a lifelong battle to save her sight.

In December 2023, Piper shared openly with her followers about her ongoing struggles, explaining that her left eye had developed a stubborn infection and defect that became increasingly difficult to manage.

Speaking candidly about her situation in an Instagram video, Katie explained:

“I’ve spent the morning back at the eye clinic as I’ve got problems with my eye. I’ve got a defect and an infection that is becoming really hard to treat.”

The decision to use a prosthetic eye shell, she admits, wasn’t easy:

“After many years battling with my eye health, I’ve reached the end of the road somewhat, and the decision has been made to try a prosthetic eye shell.”

Katie, now 41, shared images and video clips of the medical procedure, demonstrating openness about her new reality. She thanked the medical teams from both the NHS and private healthcare, emphasizing their professionalism and compassion.

In her Instagram post, she wrote:

“This marks the start of a journey to have an artificial eye, with an incredible medical team behind me. As always I’m incredibly grateful to all those in the NHS and private health care system for their talent and kindness.”

Katie encouraged followers to share their own experiences, revealing both hopefulness and nerves as she adapts to her prosthetic eye:

“I will share my journey, I’m hopeful and nervous about being able to tolerate it and would love to hear from any of you in the comments if you’ve been on this journey or have any advice.”

Since the attack, Katie has transformed her traumatic experience into advocacy, raising awareness and offering support to other survivors of violence and burns. Her efforts earned her an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2022, acknowledging her significant contributions to charity and services for burn survivors.
