Christa Pike’s attorney has urged Tennessee Governor Bill Lee to commute the convicted murderer’s death sentence to life imprisonment following her failed execution attempt.

Speaking to CNN on October 4, 2026, Pike’s lawyer, Stephen Ferrell, said he had not been allowed to see his client since the botched execution and stressed that his team was not communicating directly with the doctors treating her.

“They haven’t, and I need to emphasize that we are not consulting directly with the doctors,” Ferrell said.

He explained that Pike has a medical power of attorney who provides information about her condition but acknowledged he was unsure of the full extent of what had been communicated to that person.

“She has a medical power of attorney that gives us information. I’m not sure what all they may have told that person, but this is the extent of what we know,” he said.

Ferrell also revealed that prison officials had not allowed him to visit Pike.

“No, they haven’t let me in to see her and she is guarded. I’m not sure who may have seen her. I know for sure, I have not seen her,” he said.

Christa Pike’s attorney calls for death sentence to be commuted

Following the failed execution, Ferrell said he believed Governor Lee should take the step of reducing Pike’s death sentence to life imprisonment.

“I think, at the very least, the governor should commute Ms. Pike’s death sentence to a life sentence,” he said.

Pike was scheduled to be executed by lethal injection on October 1, 2026, but the execution was halted after officials were unable to successfully complete the procedure.

The failed execution has since triggered renewed debate over Tennessee’s death penalty procedures and what should happen to Pike following the unsuccessful attempt.

“Why did it take more than 30 years to attempt this execution? How on earth do you make a person sit in jail for 31 years and then say, “Today’s the day”! (I hate the death penalty. I despise cruelty.) Apart from whether you agree, why did it take so long?”

Plugpower83 stated:

“State-sanctioned execution is vengeance masquerading as justice, cruelty disguised as law, and the deliberate destruction of human life carried out under the illusion of moral authority. End the death penalty now!!

Redznredds stated:

“Commute? I wonder if he’s heard the statement from her victims family. It was bone chillingly sad, on point, all the things the VICTIMS who should be in the forefront here should be. If need be have a hearing but governor should be able to instruct them to pull the plug

Csottomayor stated:

“This is barbaric.”

Rdmannsconstr stated:

“Enough is enough they should not try to re-execute her.”

Blackhawk19777 stated:

“Sentence hasn’t been carried out yet.”
