Madeleine McCann suspect breaks silence from prison as final search effort begins
As German police search one last time in Portugal for clues in Madeleine McCann’s disappearance, the case’s main suspect, Christian Brueckner, gives a disturbing interview from behind bars.
Nearly 17 years after Madeleine McCann vanished from a resort in Portugal, her case remains one of the world’s most heartbreaking mysteries. Now, with the main suspect’s potential release just months away, both investigators and the public are growing increasingly anxious.
Christian Brueckner, the 48-year-old German man suspected of being involved in the toddler’s 2007 disappearance, has broken his silence in a rare prison interview. His words have only added to the unease surrounding the case.

“I’m as well-known as a colorful dog”
Brueckner, who is serving time in Germany for the 2005 rape of a 72-year-old woman near the same Portuguese resort where Madeleine disappeared, gave an exclusive interview to German journalist Ulrich Oppold.
“If I’m released, I’ll leave Germany,” Brueckner said, claiming he’ll flee to a country without an extradition treaty. “I’m as well-known as a colorful dog,” he added, suggesting he expects to go into hiding to avoid further scrutiny or legal action.
He also expressed anger at how the media has portrayed him. “Through the participation of the media, half the world considers me a cruel rapist,” he complained, continuing to deny any involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance.
From his cell in Sehnde Prison, Brueckner described harsh conditions, claiming he stays locked in 24 hours a day after being assaulted by another inmate. “I don’t go out. Not even for food,” he said.
Oppold, the journalist who spoke with him, described Brueckner as smart but distant. “He knew exactly what he wanted to say and, above all, what he didn’t want to say,” Oppold noted.
Brueckner has reportedly considered undergoing plastic surgery if released. When asked what he looks forward to most if he walks free, his answer was surprisingly simple: “A steak and beer.”
While Brueckner speaks from prison, German authorities have launched a final search near his former home in the Algarve region of Portugal — not far from where Madeleine vanished.
Over 30 officers, including members of Germany’s federal police, are combing through 120 acres of land. They are focusing on wells, underground tanks, and ruins across 21 private properties. This is the most significant investigative move in the case in more than two years.
Still no charges — and time is running out
Brueckner was named the prime suspect in 2020, but he has not been formally charged in connection to Madeleine’s disappearance. In his interview, he refused to answer any direct questions about the case after speaking with his legal team.
With his possible release from prison scheduled for September, many fear this may be the last opportunity to bring answers — and justice — to a case that has gripped the world for nearly two decades.
The Madeleine McCann case continues to stir emotions across the globe. As police dig once more for answers, and the main suspect speaks out for the first time, the world waits—hoping that this final effort might finally reveal the truth.
Will Madeleine’s family ever get the closure they deserve? Or will her disappearance remain one of history’s most chilling unsolved mysteries?
