Minneapolis school shooting leaves 2 children dead, 17 injured
Authorities say 23-year-old former student Robin Westman left a disturbing final message before opening fire
Two children were killed and 17 others injured when a gunman opened fire outside Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis on the first week back to school. The suspect, 23-year-old Robin Westman, later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after leaving behind a final note to family and friends.
The shooting took place Wednesday outside Annunciation Catholic Church, which also houses a school. Authorities said Westman, armed with a rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol, opened fire on students and families.
Hospital officials described a “mass casualty situation.” Dr. Thomas Wyatt of Hennepin Healthcare said staff treated 11 victims, nine of them children between ages six and 14. Seven patients were in critical condition, and four required emergency surgery.
Police confirmed that Westman had once attended the school and was seen on campus in the days leading up to the new school year. His mother had worked there until retiring in 2021.

The suspect’s final message
Hours before the shooting, Westman uploaded a series of disturbing YouTube videos, including what investigators believe was a manifesto. The content, since removed, revealed an obsession with mass shootings and a fixation on violence.
In a letter written in English but using the Russian Cyrillic alphabet, Westman apologized to family and admitted to struggling with despair:
“Please do not think you have failed as parents. I was corrupted by this world and have learned to hate what life is. Life is love, life is pain. I am tired of the pain this world gives out.”
The note also mentioned a fear of dying from lung cancer linked to vaping and ended with a request for prayers for victims and their families.

Mental health and unanswered questions
Court documents show Westman had legally changed their name in 2020 and had a history of mental health struggles. Investigators are now reviewing the online material, journal entries, and background of the suspect to understand what led to the deadly attack.
Authorities confirmed Westman died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene.
The shooting has reignited national debate over gun violence in schools, leaving parents, educators, and families shaken. Vigils are expected in Minneapolis as the community mourns the loss of two young lives and supports those still fighting to recover.
