Nicole Kidman leaves Venice Film Festival following her mother’s death at 83

Actress takes a break from the event to mourn the loss of her mother

Hollywood star Nicole Kidman abruptly left the 81st Venice International Film Festival following the heartbreaking news of her mother’s death. The actress had just arrived in Venice when she received the tragic information.

Kidman, who was set to receive the prestigious Volpi Cup for Best Actress for her role in the movie Babygirl, could not attend the ceremony. The film’s director, Halina Reijn, accepted the award on her behalf.

In a statement read by Reijn during the event, Kidman expressed her shock and deep sorrow, stating, “I’m in shock and I have to go to my family. But this award is for her. She shaped me, she guided me and she made me.” The crowd was visibly moved, with audible gasps heard throughout the audience as they learned of the tragic news.

Kidman’s connection with her mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, has always been strong. In a 2022 interview, Nicole revealed her mother’s health issues and spoke about their deep bond. She shared how her mother’s insights, as an elderly woman, had been incredibly valuable to her, praising her mother’s sharp mind and honest approach to life.

Janelle Ann Kidman, who often accompanied her daughter to events, passed away at 83. Nicole’s father, a psychologist, died in 2014. The loss of her mother marks a significant moment in the actress’s life, and she has expressed that her heart is broken.

Kidman’s new movie Babygirl, in which she plays a chief executive entangled in an affair with a younger intern, was well-received at the festival. It garnered a seven-minute standing ovation, with Kidman reportedly moved by the overwhelming response before the devastating news reached her.

Our deepest condolences go out to Nicole Kidman and her family during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Janelle Ann Kidman.
