Read about the tragic incident involving an Olympian who was fatally attacked by her ex-boyfriend

The world of athletics mourns the loss of Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei, who tragically passed away following a brutal domestic violence incident. Her story not only highlights the dangers of domestic abuse but also serves as a painful reminder of the need for justice and protection for vulnerable individuals.

Cheptegei, a 33-year-old marathon runner, returned home after competing in the Paris Olympics, settling in Trans Nzoia County, northwest Kenya, to be closer to elite training centers. She had recently built a home there after purchasing land. Unfortunately, this became the source of a heated dispute with her ex-boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema.

Police reports indicate that after a disagreement over the property, Ndiema attacked Cheptegei, dousing her in gasoline and setting her on fire. She sustained burns on more than 75% of her body and was rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, where she fought for her life. Sadly, despite medical efforts, the severity of her injuries led to multi-organ failure, and she passed away at 5:30 AM on the day of her death.

The Uganda Athletics Federation expressed their grief on Platform X, condemning the act of violence and calling for justice. Cheptegei’s father, Joseph, also demanded justice from the Kenyan government, emphasizing the devastating impact of losing their family’s breadwinner and the uncertainty now surrounding the future of her two children.

Cheptegei was remembered fondly by her peers. Fellow athlete James Kirwa, who visited her in the hospital, described her as a generous and supportive person who always helped others. He recounted how she brought him training shoes after her Olympic stint, showing her kindness and dedication to uplifting those around her.

As the investigation continues, Ndiema remains hospitalized with less severe burns. Authorities are working to ensure that the case is fully addressed, with many calling for swift justice.
