Pope Francis remains in critical condition as he battles pneumonia and kidney issues
Vatican confirms Holy Father’s health struggles amid ongoing treatment
Pope Francis, 88, is battling bilateral pneumonia and early-stage kidney failure, with the Vatican confirming his condition remains critical. The pontiff has been receiving treatment at Gemelli University Hospital in Rome, where he has been hospitalized since last week.
Over the past weekend, Pope Francis suffered a severe asthmatic respiratory crisis, which was further complicated by the fact that he had part of one of his lungs removed in his youth. Although his breathing issues have stabilized since Saturday evening, doctors remain cautious about his recovery.
The Vatican has reported that while his condition is serious, he has not experienced additional respiratory crises in recent days. He continues to receive oxygen therapy and remains under close medical supervision.
Early signs of kidney failure
In addition to pneumonia, medical tests have shown that Pope Francis is experiencing mild kidney dysfunction. Despite this, Vatican officials state that his low platelet count remains stable, and his kidney issues are currently under control.
As part of his treatment, the pope received two units of concentrated red blood cells, which improved his hemoglobin levels. However, his overall condition remains complex, and his prognosis is uncertain. According to reports, he is expected to stay in the hospital for at least another week.

Continuing his spiritual duties
Despite his health struggles, Pope Francis continues to remain engaged with his faith. On Monday, he participated in a Holy Mass held in his hospital apartment on the tenth floor, surrounded by his caregivers.
The pope also took a moment to express gratitude for the global outpouring of prayers and support. In a message shared on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote:
“I have recently received many messages of affection, and I have been particularly struck by the letters and drawings from children. Thank you for your closeness, and for the consoling prayers I have received from all over the world!”

He is widely respected for his humility, focus on social justice, and efforts to reform the Church. His leadership has had a profound impact on millions of Catholics worldwide.
As he continues his battle with pneumonia and kidney issues, the world watches and prays for his recovery.
