Reporter discovers teen’s body live on air while covering river disappearance
Brazilian journalist’s live segment takes tragic turn as search for missing girl ends in grim discovery
A live broadcast in Brazil took an unexpected turn when a reporter covering the disappearance of a 13-year-old girl discovered her body in a river. The shocking moment unfolded in real time, leaving viewers and the community in mourning.
On June 30, Brazilian journalist Lenildo Frazão was reporting on the disappearance of Raissa, who had gone missing the previous day while swimming with friends in the Mearim River.
The broadcast began as a routine update, with Frazão wading into the shallow water, microphone in hand, describing the area where the girl was last seen. But as he searched, his tone changed.

“There’s something down here,” he said on air, pausing mid-sentence. His voice grew tense as he examined the riverbed. Moments later, he appeared startled and stepped back before cautiously moving forward again. Then came the words that stunned viewers: “Oh my God… where’s the rest of her? It was right here.”
Police confirm the discovery
Authorities later confirmed that the remains found were Raissa’s. Divers recovered her body shortly after the broadcast ended.
Police reported that the teenager had been swimming when she was caught in the river’s current. Friends ran to get help, but by the time they returned, she had vanished beneath the water.
The live discovery has prompted renewed discussion about river safety during Brazil’s dry season, when many children and teens swim in unsupervised areas.

Frazão, a veteran journalist, later said he was at a loss for words about what happened. The incident, widely shared online, has left a lasting impact on viewers and the community.
The broadcast, which began as a search update, became a stark reminder of the dangers of swimming in unmonitored waters. As friends, family, and neighbors gather to remember Raissa, the call for better safety measures grows louder.
