Tied to a rock and left to die—what happened next saved her life

A year after a cruel drowning attempt, Bella the dog has found safety, healing, and a forever home.

A 10-year-old Belgian shepherd named Bella was rescued from a freezing river after being tied to a rock and left to drown by her owner — but thanks to kind strangers and the RSPCA, she now has a second chance at life.

It was a cold winter day in 2020 when Jane Harper went for a walk near the River Trent in England. She was shocked to spot a dog fighting to keep her head above the icy water.

“She literally fought to get her head above water and managed to rest it on a step,” Jane told the Daily Mail. “How could anyone do this to her?”

Without hesitating, Jane jumped into the river and pulled the struggling dog to safety. To her horror, the dog had been tied by her leash to a heavy rock — someone had clearly tried to drown her.

Near death, but not defeated

The dog, later identified as Bella, was rushed to a local vet. She was in critical condition — dangerously cold, shaking uncontrollably, and suffering from dangerously low blood sugar.

“If she had not been treated at this stage, it is likely she would have died,” a vet told ITV News.

Bella was transferred to the RSPCA Radcliffe Animal Centre in Nottingham for recovery and rehabilitation. Thanks to her microchip, authorities were able to trace her owner — 31-year-old Carlene Latham — who admitted to the horrific act and pleaded guilty.

Justice for Bella — and a fresh start

Carlene received a 12-month community order, a £280 fine, and was banned from owning dogs for three years. Though many feel the punishment was too light, there was at least one silver lining — Bella had survived.

Now 11 years old, Bella has spent the past year healing at the RSPCA, surrounded by people who showed her love and care. And finally, she has a new forever home.

Maggie Mellish and Charlie Douglas from South Derbyshire were touched by Bella’s story. With over 30 years of experience caring for shepherd-type dogs, they knew they could give her the peaceful retirement she deserved.

“We know she is in her older years but we just want to offer her a loving home she so deserves after all she has been through,” said Maggie.

A heartwarming reunion

Before heading to her new home, Bella got to meet her first rescuer once more. Jane Harper, the woman who pulled her from the river, visited the RSPCA for an emotional reunion.

“It is quite emotional seeing Bella as it brings back memories of that terrible day,” Jane said. “We are thrilled to see how she has been transformed.”

The RSPCA staff, who had cared for Bella during her recovery, celebrated the happy ending too.

“We will all miss Bella very much but feel a sense of peace and accomplishment that she has now found such a wonderful home,” the shelter wrote in a Facebook post.

Bella’s journey reminds us of the deep cruelty some animals face — but also of the powerful impact of kindness. From the stranger who risked her own safety, to the RSPCA staff who cared for her, to the family that opened their home, Bella was surrounded by people who refused to give up on her.

“Bella has been courageous throughout and she truly is a very special dog,” the RSPCA shared. “She definitely deserves her place in the hearts of many across the world.”

Let Bella’s story be a reminder: even in the darkest moments, compassion can lead to a beautiful new beginning.
