Young father dies after rare lung infection leaves 72 holes in his lungs
Dylan Jay Watts, 28, from New South Wales, battled a devastating bacterial infection that progressed rapidly despite intensive treatment.
A 28-year-old father from Broulee, Australia, died unexpectedly after a bacterial lung infection left him with 72 holes in his lungs — a dramatic escalation from just two a few years prior.
Dylan Jay Watts had been unwell for years, but even his loved ones were unprepared for how quickly his condition would deteriorate. The father of one began experiencing severe respiratory issues in 2021. Doctors discovered two holes in his lungs. By mid-2024, that number had climbed to 72.
Despite chronic symptoms — including coughing, reflux, fatigue, and multiple hospital visits — Dylan remained hopeful. His sister Caitlyn recalled how he once carried so many medications that they filled a backpack. “He was severely unwell yet fighting for his health,” she told Daily Mail Australia.
Specialists had warned him the infection was so aggressive that he might not live past 30.

A sudden end after years of struggle
Just five days before his death on March 22, Dylan was brought home by his mother Suzanne to plan for long-term care. He passed away shortly before his 29th birthday.
The sudden loss has left his family and friends reeling. “Although he had been gravely ill… his loved ones were shocked,” said family friend Cheyenne O’Brien.
Dylan’s identity was rooted in being a dad. When his son was born, he wrote: “Words cannot describe how much more purpose I feel with you in my life!”

His family has launched a GoFundMe to help cover funeral expenses, raising over AU$4,600 of their AU$6,000 goal. Caitlyn urged others to appreciate the time they have with their loved ones: “Let this be a reminder that those you love can be gone in an instant.”
Dylan’s death adds urgency to conversations around rare bacterial infections and long-term lung health. His story, and his fight to stay present for his son, remain with the many people who knew and loved him.
