Army veteran thought about ending his life, but a little black and white kitten changed everything
The challenges that service members face upon returning home after their duty are profound and often overlooked. The mental scars, which can be as debilitating as physical wounds, sometimes push these heroes to their limits.
Army Sgt. Josh Marino is one such brave soul who, despite serving with honor, grappled with intense inner battles once back home. His time in Iraq not only left him with a brain injury but also with severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The weight of these afflictions grew so heavy that he contemplated ending his life. Josh recalled the depths of his despair, saying, “I did not want to deal with it anymore. I took out one of my knives … I wrote a letter on my computer and went outside to smoke one last cigarette.”
A seemingly inconsequential moment turned into a lifesaving intervention for Josh Marino. As he was on the precipice of despair, the meow of a small black and white kitten cut through the silence at Fort Riley, Kansas. From the nearby bushes, the kitten made its way to Josh, seeking affection.
Recalling that pivotal encounter, Josh shared, “He just walked up and started rubbing up against my leg and let me pet him, I broke down crying, burst into tears. Maybe he knew there was something I couldn’t quite handle.”
This unexpected companionship shifted Josh’s perspective. He said, “I stopped thinking about all my problems and started thinking about his problems and what I could do to help him.” In the midst of his own turmoil, this small creature gave him a renewed purpose.
A simple act of kindness can leave an indelible mark. Josh learned this firsthand when he began to care for Scout, the kitten that wandered into his life during one of his darkest moments. Every day, Josh fed Scout and a bond grew between them, pulling Josh back from the brink of despair. But, like some stories of fate, Scout disappeared one day, leaving a void in Josh’s life.
Time passed, and while Scout’s memory lingered, life went on. When Josh began dating a woman who recognized the transformative power animals had on him, they decided to adopt a cat. Little did Josh know, destiny had a surprise in store.
At the adoption event, among a myriad of other cats, one particular paw reached out, unmistakably familiar. It was Scout. The serendipitous reunion was a powerful moment for Josh. He said, “All of a sudden a little black and white paw shoots out from a crate and starts smacking me in my left arm. I opened up that cage, and I pulled him out, and I held him tight.”
Adopting Scout wasn’t just about bringing a pet home; it symbolized Josh’s journey of healing and transformation. With Scout by his side once again, Josh turned over a new leaf – adopting a healthier lifestyle, taking better care of himself, and even quitting smoking. The bond they shared truly showcased the healing power of unconditional love.
After the challenges he faced during his service, Josh’s life took a transformative turn, thanks to an unexpected furry friend. The Army medically discharged him, but life had more in store. Josh married his loving girlfriend, Becky, pursued higher education, and achieved a master’s degree in clinical rehabilitation and mental health counseling. With his past experiences fueling his drive, he started counseling fellow veterans at the Department of Veteran Affairs.
The simple, yet profound connection with a stray kitten not only pulled Josh back from the precipice but also gave him a renewed purpose. He transformed his pain and experiences into a mission, counseling veterans who faced similar struggles he once did. The extent of the positive impact Josh might have had on others through his work is immeasurable.
The story of Josh and Scout is a testament to the incredible bond between humans and animals. It’s a poignant reminder that even in our darkest hours, a beacon of hope can emerge from the most unexpected places. The sacrifices Josh made for his country weighed heavily on him, but with Scout’s intervention and the subsequent turn of events, he found a path to healing and purpose.
