Drake Hogestyn, famous for his role as John Black on Days of Our Lives, leaves behind a legacy of nearly four decades on daytime television. He appeared in almost 4,300 episodes, captivating audiences with gripping storylines and intense relationships.

Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 1953, Drake’s journey wasn’t always about acting. In fact, many don’t know that he was drafted by the New York Yankees as a promising baseball player. Unfortunately, a career-ending injury shifted his focus toward acting, which led him to Columbia Pictures in the early 1980s.

His big break came when he was cast as a mysterious character, “The Pawn,” in Days of Our Lives in 1986. This role quickly evolved into John Black, one of the most iconic characters in the soap’s history. Drake’s on-screen chemistry with his co-star Deidre Hall (who played Marlena) made them one of daytime TV’s supercouples, adored by fans worldwide. Despite the show’s budget cuts that temporarily led to his exit in 2008, fan demand saw him and Hall return, proving just how much their presence was valued.

Hogestyn’s battle off-screen, however, was his toughest. Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, he fought courageously before passing on September 28, 2024, surrounded by his family. His family released a heartfelt statement, praising his strength and the determination with which he faced the illness. They shared how Drake had “faced the curveball of his life” but remained strong throughout his battle.
