On March 20, 1991, music legend Eric Clapton lost his 4-year-old son, Conor, in a tragic accident in New York City. Just a day earlier, the father and son had spent their first full day together alone, with Clapton making a promise that would never come true.
Eric Clapton, known for his deep, emotional songs and guitar skills, experienced a kind of pain no parent should ever face — the loss of a child. His son Conor, just shy of turning five, died after falling from a 53rd-floor apartment window in Manhattan.
The accident happened in a moment of distraction. Conor, who was in New York with his mother, Italian actress Lory Del Santo, ran past a window that had been left open after cleaning. Lory, who had briefly stepped away to check a fax machine, was only moments too late.

“If I hadn’t checked the fax, he’d still be alive,” she said in a heartbreaking recollection.
At the time, Clapton and Del Santo were no longer together, but they had made plans to spend Easter as a family. On March 19, the day before the accident, Clapton had taken Conor to the circus. It was their first full day alone together — a special outing filled with laughter, clowns, and elephants.
It was also the day Clapton made a promise that would never come true: to take Conor to the Bronx Zoo the following day and then out for lunch at a nearby Italian restaurant.
A father rediscovering his role
After their magical day at the circus, Clapton was filled with joy. According to his biographer, Philip Norman, that sawdust-scented afternoon made Clapton realize how much he had missed out on in Conor’s life.
He even told Lory that he wanted to be a “proper father” from then on. He had hopes of bringing both Conor and Lory to live with him in London. It seemed like a new chapter was just beginning for the music icon.
But by the next morning, that dream was shattered.

Silence, sorrow, and the search for healing
Clapton was in another part of New York when he got the devastating news. When Lory told him what had happened, he was frozen in shock. “It was like he’d just stopped functioning,” she said.
After the funeral in Ripley, Clapton’s hometown in Surrey, England, the grieving father escaped to Antigua, where he spent nearly a year in a quiet cottage. He spoke to almost no one, finding comfort only in a small Spanish guitar.
“I went off to Antigua… I stayed there for almost a whole year, without much contact with the outside world, and I tried to heal myself,” Clapton later said.
In the depths of his grief, music became his lifeline. He rewrote and replayed songs over and over, trying to process his pain. From that dark place, Clapton created one of his most touching songs — Tears in Heaven.
A letter that came too late
While Tears in Heaven became the song most associated with his son’s memory, there was another moment that hit Clapton just as hard — a letter from Conor.
Just days before the accident, the young boy had asked his mother to help him write his first letter to his dad. “Oh mummy, I want to write a letter to daddy, what shall I write?” he asked. With her help, he simply wrote, “I love you.”
The letter was mailed to Clapton’s home in London and didn’t arrive until after the funeral. Lory was there when Clapton opened it.
“That is a moment I cannot forget,” she said.
