Goldie Hawn shares why she never married Kurt Russell after 41 years together
The Hollywood couple’s lasting love story without marriage holds a surprising truth
When people think about lasting relationships in Hollywood, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell often come to mind. Despite the common belief that celebrity relationships don’t last, this iconic couple has been together for decades—without ever getting married.
Goldie Hawn once shared her views on marriage with Woman’s Day in 2007, saying, “We have done just perfectly without marrying. I already feel devoted, and isn’t that what marriage is supposed to do?”
The two first met on the set of The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band in 1966. However, sparks didn’t fly at the time—Goldie was 21 and Kurt was still a teenager. Both went on to build successful acting careers.
“I thought he was adorable, but he was much too young,” Goldie recalled. “Then, years later we met up again, and I remembered that I liked him very much when I first met him. We both said we would never go out with another actor so it just shows you never can tell.”
Their paths crossed again during the filming of Swing Shift, and this time, the connection was undeniable. Kurt, who was hungover at the time, blurted out, “Man, you’ve got a great figure,” which could have gone badly but worked out in his favor. Goldie graciously replied, “Why thank you.”
Goldie, who had two children from her previous marriage with Bill Hudson, welcomed Kurt into her family. Her son Oliver was born in 1976, and her daughter Kate in 1979. As time went on, Kurt became a beloved father figure to them.
In 2017, Kurt told People that marriage was never necessary for their relationship. “For people like us, the marriage certificate wasn’t going to create anything that otherwise we wouldn’t have,” he said. Goldie added, “
“Our children got married … Oliver’s very happily married and Wyatt’s very happily married. Katie got married once and that didn’t work, and she’s with this most amazing human and I don’t know if she’ll marry again. The point is that we all tried marriage and sometimes marriage doesn’t work. It’s not about the marriage. It’s about the people and the relationship, and the will to stay together.”
Now grandparents to six, Goldie and Kurt love spending time with their grandchildren, who lovingly call them Gogo and Gogi. They often share family moments on social media, showing just how tight-knit they are.
Both Oliver and Kate Hudson regard Kurt as their real father. Kate has spoken about her estranged relationship with her biological father, Bill Hudson, saying Kurt has always been the father figure in her life. “He was around when [my brother, Oliver Hudson, and I] were young, it sort of teetered out,” she shared.
Though Goldie and Kurt never married, they remain deeply committed to each other. Goldie once told Cosmopolitan in 1986 that she found the idea of marriage “ridiculous.” For her, the relationship was more important than a marriage certificate.
One of the most touching moments in their relationship was when they received their stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The couple shared a passionate kiss, showing the world that their love is still strong after all these years.
Goldie also revealed that Kurt frequently compliments her, sharing with People that one night, before heading out to dinner, Kurt told her, “You’re unbelievable.” Goldie said, “He really appreciates that. It is really good combination.”
Goldie’s daughter Kate Hudson looks up to her parents’ relationship and calls it her “goal.” She’s often wondered how they’ve managed to stay so close after all this time, and she’s still trying to figure out the secret herself.
This love story defies Hollywood norms and serves as a reminder that commitment, not a marriage certificate, is what truly matters.
