Hollywood icon was once unwanted—until a coat changed his life

This legendary actor overcame a tough childhood and found hope in an unexpected gift.

Losing a child is an unbearable tragedy, no matter their age. Sylvester Stallone knows this pain all too well, having lost his first-born son, Sage Stallone, in 2012. While many speculated about the cause of Sage’s untimely passing, the truth was more heartbreaking than anyone expected.

Before facing the unimaginable grief of losing his son, Stallone endured his own share of hardships growing up. His life, in many ways, resembled that of his iconic Rocky Balboa character—full of struggles, determination, and eventual triumph.

Born in 1946, Stallone’s entrance into the world was anything but easy. A complication during his delivery resulted in nerve damage that left part of his face paralyzed. This gave him his signature slurred speech and drooping lip, which later became part of his tough-guy persona. But as a child, it made him a target for bullying.

At home, life wasn’t much better. Stallone has spoken about the emotional and physical abuse he endured from his father, as well as the coldness of his mother, who he claims only kissed him twice during his entire childhood.

The troubled young boy often found himself in trouble—by the age of 12, he had been expelled from 13 schools and had broken 11 bones. But despite the rocky start, Stallone found an escape in bodybuilding and, later, acting.

Before becoming a household name, Stallone endured years of financial struggle, even experiencing homelessness in New York City. He often recalled how a single coat helped him survive freezing winter nights. But his life changed when he landed the role of a lifetime in Rocky (1976), launching him into fame and fortune.

From struggling actor to devoted father

Before his rise to stardom, Stallone married photographer and director Sasha Czack in 1974. Together, they had two sons—Sage in 1976 and Seargeoh in 1979. However, their marriage ended in divorce in 1985.

Stallone later married model Brigitte Nielsen, though their union lasted only two years. In 1997, he wed his current wife, Jennifer Flavin, with whom he shares three daughters—Sophia, Sistine, and Scarlet.

Despite his career success, Stallone’s greatest joy was being a father, and his relationship with Sage was particularly special.

Sage Stallone: A rising talent with a love for film

Sage, much like his father, had a passion for film. He dabbled in acting and even starred alongside Stallone in Rocky V (1990) and Daylight (1996). However, his true passion lay behind the scenes. He founded Grindhouse Releasing, a company dedicated to restoring classic films.

Those who knew Sage described him as a kind, creative, and energetic young man. But on July 13, 2012, his promising future was cut short when he was found dead in his Los Angeles home at just 36 years old.

The shocking rumors surrounding Sage’s death

In the days following his passing, speculation ran wild. Some reports suggested Sage had been dead for several days before being found, though this was later proven false. Others claimed his room was filled with liquor bottles, leading many to suspect drug or alcohol abuse.

However, Sage’s attorney and longtime friend, George Braunstein, strongly denied these allegations. He stated that Sage did not have a history of substance abuse and that the “bottles” found in his home were actually cream soda.

Another rumor suggested that Sage had taken his own life, but this too was ruled out. There was no suicide note, and according to those closest to him, he had been planning his wedding with his longtime girlfriend.

As the public debated the cause of Sage’s death, his father was left shattered, pleading for privacy.

“I am imploring people to respect my wonderfully talented son’s memory and feel compassion for his loving mother, Sasha,” Stallone said. “Sage was our first child and the center of our universe. I am humbly begging for all to have my son’s memory and soul left in peace.”

A mother’s intuition: The heartbreaking truth behind Sage’s death

Weeks before his death, Sage underwent a significant dental procedure, despite his mother’s warnings.

“I told him not to do that,” Sasha Czack revealed. “I’ve heard about people dying from having multiple procedures done to their mouth. Do not have more than one tooth [pulled].”

Sage, however, went ahead and had five teeth removed. To manage the pain, he took prescribed medication. Two weeks later, he was gone.

In late August 2012, the official cause of death was confirmed—Sage had died of atherosclerosis, a condition that causes the arteries to harden, leading to a fatal heart attack. Though painkillers were found in his system, there was no evidence of an overdose.

For Stallone, the wait for answers was agonizing, and the loss of his son left a permanent scar on his heart. In the face of overwhelming grief, he turned to work as a way to cope.

Despite the tragedy, Stallone finds comfort in his remaining children. His second son, Seargeoh, who was diagnosed with autism as a child, has stayed out of the spotlight. Meanwhile, his three daughters have forged their own paths—Sophia and Sistine co-host the Unwaxed podcast, while Scarlet is pursuing a modeling and acting career.

Though time may help heal wounds, the loss of a child is something no parent ever fully recovers from.
