Melissa Sue Anderson explains why she left Hollywood for Canada
The 'Little House on the Prairie' star shares her reasons for moving away from the spotlight to a new life in Canada.
When you think back to the TV shows you loved as a kid, you might wonder what happened to the actors who brought those characters to life. For fans of the beloved series “Little House on the Prairie,” the question often comes up: Where are the stars now? Particularly, what happened to Melissa Sue Anderson, who portrayed Mary Ingalls?
Melissa Sue Anderson, once a staple on television screens as the eldest Ingalls daughter, took a different path after her time on the show. Although many expected her to remain in the spotlight, Anderson chose a quieter life, moving away from Hollywood to focus on her family.
Early Career and Breakthrough Role
Anderson’s career began with guest roles on various TV shows, but her big break came when she joined the cast of “Little House on the Prairie.” Her portrayal of Mary Ingalls earned her critical acclaim, including several nominations for Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Fans appreciated her nuanced performances, which brought depth to a character that, according to Anderson herself, was not as prominent in the original books.
In a 2010 interview with Pop Entertainment, Anderson reflected on her time on the show, noting how fortunate she was to have a significant role despite Mary Ingalls being less central in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books. “The characters of Ma and Mary didn’t factor in a lot. There was a lot of Laura and Pa and Laura and Jack the dog and Laura and Mr. Edwards, but there wasn’t a lot of Mary. I’m fortunate that they discovered that I could act,” she said.
Life After the Spotlight
After “Little House on the Prairie,” Anderson explored other acting roles, though none reached the same level of fame. Her life took a significant turn in 1990 when she married television producer Michael Sloan. In 2002, Anderson and her family moved to Montreal, Canada, where they settled down with their two children, Piper and Griffin.
By 2007, Anderson and her family had become Canadian citizens. With this new chapter, she decided to step away from acting to dedicate more time to her family. Anderson was keen on ensuring her children grew up with a strong sense of self, separate from the pressures of Hollywood.
In an interview with E-Talk, Anderson explained her decision: “I really stepped away for a long time. That was really for the kids so they would have their own sense of who they were as opposed to being with me.”
A Brief Return and Memoir
Although Anderson largely withdrew from the entertainment industry, she didn’t leave acting entirely. She has taken on smaller roles over the years, but her most significant contribution after “Little House” might be her memoir. Titled The Way I See It: A Look Back at My Life on Little House, the book offers a personal glimpse into her experiences on the show and how it shaped her life.
Anderson’s journey from a beloved child star to a dedicated mother and author shows a life well-lived, marked by thoughtful decisions and a focus on what truly matters—family.
