Missing brothers found after flood in heartbreaking discovery
A tragic end to the search for two brothers swept away during a devastating flood
The devastating floods in Valencia, Spain, have left a nation mourning, with over 220 lives lost and entire communities wiped out. Among the victims were two brothers, Rubén and Izan Matías Calatayud, whose tragic story has touched hearts across the globe.
It was an ordinary evening on October 29 in the town of Torrent, just outside Valencia. Rubén, 5, and Izan, 3, were waiting for dinner as their father prepared a meal. Without warning, a massive surge of floodwater ripped through their neighborhood, bringing chaos and destruction.
A parked trailer swept away by the raging waters crashed into the family’s home, causing the walls to collapse. As the water surged inside, their father clung to his boys, desperately trying to protect them.
A father’s desperate struggle
Family members recount how the father, in a heroic effort, moved his sons to the living room to shield them from the rising waters. But the flood showed no mercy.
When the house began to crumble, the father fought with every ounce of strength to keep Rubén and Izan safe. Tragically, the overpowering current tore the boys from his arms. All three were swept into the torrent of water and debris.
The father survived, clinging to a tree for hours before being rescued. Severely injured, he was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. His survival, however, came with unimaginable heartbreak.
A mother’s worst nightmare
The boys’ mother, who had been working in Valencia, returned to find her family shattered. For two agonizing weeks, search teams scoured the area with dwindling hope. Volunteers from across Spain joined the search, driven by the nation’s collective grief.
Finally, Rubén and Izan’s bodies were found six miles downstream, at separate locations. Their family’s worst fears were confirmed.
“We’re devastated,” their aunt, Barbara Sastre, said in an interview. “We weren’t expecting them to be found alive, but it always hurts when you get confirmation they’ve died.”
Adding to the heartbreak, the family’s beloved dog was also found lifeless.

A survivor’s unbearable guilt
The boys’ father remains hospitalized, haunted by a guilt he cannot escape. His mother shared that he feels he failed to protect his children.
“He was about to let go and let the current take him too,” she said. “But the thought of his wife, and not leaving her alone, gave him the strength to hold on.”
A nation grieves
The tragedy of Rubén and Izan is a painful reminder of the power of nature and the fragility of life. As Spain continues its efforts to recover from the worst floods in decades, the story of these two young brothers has united the nation in grief.
Communities are coming together to rebuild, offering support to those who have lost so much. But for one family in Torrent, the void left by Rubén and Izan is a loss that time can never fill.
Their story serves as a solemn call to cherish our loved ones, recognizing how quickly life can change. May Rubén and Izan’s memory live on as symbols of love, resilience, and the enduring strength of family bonds.
