Starving horse left in mud to die is rescued and now wins awards

The team immediately sprang into action, but it took five people to lift Heidi onto her feet. Her condition was so fragile that they weren’t sure if she would survive. According to Wendy Suddes, a spokesperson for the Here4Horses charity, it was unclear whether the horse’s owner believed she was already dead, but one thing was clear: Heidi had endured extreme cruelty and neglect.

In the critical days following her rescue, Heidi’s life hung in the balance. She was so weak that she couldn’t stand on her own, and her blood protein levels were dangerously low, requiring a plasma transfusion. It took over five weeks before Heidi could stand by herself, thanks to healthy horses donating blood and careful care from the nonprofit team.

Despite her condition, Heidi’s fighting spirit never wavered. Slowly but surely, she began to recover. Over time, with months of dedicated care, Heidi’s sores healed, and she regained her strength. Today, she runs free in the pastures, her beautiful mane flowing in the wind, having overcome incredible odds.
