Couple with Down syndrome chooses to have kids despite criticism

Their decision sparks debate, raising questions about parenting, genetics, and societal perceptions.

Lisa White, a mother with Down syndrome, faced skepticism and criticism when she decided to have a child—but with the unwavering support of her mother, Patti, she raised a son who is thriving today.

Society often expects people to follow a specific life path—get a job, find a partner, get married, and have children. But when someone makes a choice that deviates from these norms, they are often met with judgment and skepticism.

Lisa White, a woman with Down syndrome from California, experienced this firsthand when she announced she was expecting a child. Many people questioned her ability to be a good mother, while others deemed her decision selfish. But Lisa, with the strong support of her mother, Patti White, was determined to prove them wrong.

Lisa’s journey to motherhood

Lisa had been living independently since she was 18. She had her own apartment, worked full-time at Goodwill, and maintained a relationship with her boyfriend, who also had Down syndrome.

“At the time, all the books said males with Down syndrome were sterile and people told us not to worry about it as they couldn’t get pregnant,” Patti told Voice in 2016. But fate had other plans.

One day, Lisa left a voicemail for her mother that changed everything:

“Hi mom, I just wanted you to know you are going to be a GRANDMOTHER!”

Patti was shocked but quickly stood by her daughter’s decision. Though some outsiders criticized Lisa’s choice, her family offered full support, ensuring she had the resources needed for a safe and healthy pregnancy.

Lisa, like many expectant mothers, attended childbirth classes and had a pregnancy coach. She worked five days a week while dealing with morning sickness and other pregnancy challenges. Because of her condition, Lisa’s pregnancy was considered high-risk, and doctors closely monitored her health.

Her son, Nic, was born four weeks early and, like his parents, was diagnosed with Down syndrome. Despite the challenges ahead, Lisa was determined to give him the best life possible.

Overcoming obstacles and proving critics wrong

Nic’s father was present for his birth, and for a short time, the couple attempted to live together. However, it didn’t work out, and Lisa became a single mother. Sadly, Nic’s father passed away when Nic was just five years old.

Lisa faced many challenges as a single mother with Down syndrome. Some of her friends distanced themselves because their parents feared Lisa’s situation would influence their daughters. But none of this mattered to Lisa—her focus was on raising her son with love and care.

With the help of her mother, Patti, Lisa ensured Nic had everything he needed. Over the years, their small but strong family unit thrived. Today, Nic is 24 years old, a college graduate, and deeply grateful for the two women who raised him.

“I have two moms. My mom Lisa is my greatest future in my life. She gave me life, she gave me love, and she is always wonderful and beautiful,” Nic said, as reported by Fabiosa.

A powerful message of love and perseverance

In 2016, Patti shared a heartfelt update on Facebook, celebrating a milestone: Lisa turned 50, and Nic turned 20. Along with a picture of the smiling mother and son, she wrote:

“This is my daughter, Lisa, clowning with her son, Nic. They both have Down Syndrome. This year is a landmark for all of us. She will turn 50 and he will turn 20. Me, I am older than dirt. So proud of us. Our goal when she became pregnant was for her to know him and have a relationship with him. There were many ups to their ‘Downs,’ but after all these years, we can honestly say they have overcome the odds and share tremendous love for each other and their small little family unit.”

Lisa and Nic’s story is a testament to the power of love, resilience, and support. While many doubted Lisa’s ability to be a mother, she proved that parenthood is not about perfection—it’s about love, patience, and dedication.

Their journey continues to inspire others, showing that people with Down syndrome can lead fulfilling lives and overcome obstacles with the right support.
