Inside the struggles and challenging life of Justin Bieber’s mother—Pattie Mallette

Pattie Mellette, a scriptwriter and producer, is widely recognized as the mother of international pop star Justin Bieber. Despite her current fame, not many are aware of the struggles she has faced throughout her life.

Canadian sensation Justin Bieber is often seen as having it all, but like anyone else, he encounters challenges and personal difficulties. One such issue is his turbulent relationship with his mother, Pattie Malette. Given her difficult past, it’s not surprising that their relationship has been complex.

Pattie became a mother at just 17 years old, when she gave birth to Justin. As a single parent, she faced many challenges and raised him in a low-income housing area in Canada, with some support from her own parents, Justin’s grandparents.

Pattie has experienced a significant amount of abuse and violence throughout her life, beginning when she was only 3 years old. She has shared that her abusers included a male babysitter, her friend’s grandfather, and older neighborhood children. “My offenders include a male babysitter, the grandfather of one of my friends, and neighborhood children reportedly mature beyond their years,” she says.

Pattie faced a turbulent adolescence, turning to substance use at the age of 14. She also started shoplifting and was expelled from school for setting a fire in the bathroom. Despite her difficult upbringing, she found solace in the arts, which she later shared as a bond with her son, Justin.

When Pattie was 15, she began dating Jeremy Bieber. Their relationship continued for four years, but she ran away from home at 16. To survive, she resorted to theft and drug dealing.

Pattie’s mental health declined as the consequences of her past and ongoing struggles took a toll on her. At 17, she attempted suicide and was subsequently admitted to a mental institution that employed Christian conversion therapy.

Following her release from the hospital, Mallette sought connections with old friends and coworkers who didn’t share her newfound religious beliefs. It was during this time that she reconnected with Jeremy Bieber.

Six months into their renewed relationship, Pattie discovered she was pregnant. Justin was born in London, Ontario, on March 1, 1994. Although Pattie and Jeremy continued dating after Justin’s birth, they eventually parted ways after a few months.

Despite her own hardships, Pattie remained a devoted and supportive mother. She encouraged Justin in his musical pursuits and even helped him participate in the 2007 Stratford Star talent competition during his teenage years.

Justin’s performance of Ne-Yo’s “So Sick” earned him second place in the competition, and Pattie uploaded the video to YouTube. The popularity of this and subsequent videos she posted helped propel him to stardom.

In September 2012, Pattie’s autobiography, “Nowhere But Up,” was published by Christian publishing house Revell. The book chronicled her challenging upbringing and how she turned to faith and love to find optimism and become the best single parent possible for her son. Over time, the dynamics of their relationship have evolved.

”When your kids hit a certain age your parenting style changes and it is hard letting go,” Mallette told People in 2013, when her son turned 19 years old.

”His life was my life and now I’ve had to let him go a little bit and let him be independent. It is hard to not be able to control everything that your adult child does.”

Following his meteoric rise to fame, Justin Bieber encountered legal troubles, including a 2014 arrest for street racing at 4 a.m. This incident strained his relationship with his mother, Pattie.

In a 2015 interview with Billboard, Justin revealed, “I never wanted my mom to be disappointed in me and I knew she was. We spent some time not talking, so it takes time to rebuild that trust… it’s hard, but getting better. She’s an amazing woman and I love her.”

Since then, that challenging chapter in Justin’s life has faded, and Pattie now takes great pride in her son’s accomplishments.

“I’m so proud of the amazing young man you are, and the young man you are becoming. None of us are perfect and never will be, (so we will always need patience and grace for each other), but your genuine growing relationship with Jesus is evident in the choices you are making daily and the good ‘fruit’ you bear. I admire your character and integrity. You are maturing beautifully and wise beyond your years,” Pattie posted on Instagram.
