Usually, young and attractive people are shown in love stories in movies, books, or online, where everyone talks about the newest celebrity couples. However, an older couple inspired a woman to show what real love and romance look like.

Emily Hime shared the touching story of her grandmother’s final months. Even though it was a sad time, she also saw something amazing: the deep love between her grandparents.

She told Love What Matters that her family used to joke that her grandfather couldn’t live without her grandma because she did everything for him. However, during her grandmother’s last months, it was he who took care of her.

Emily said,“Through this, I have realized that the most romantic love story isn’t Romeo and Juliet… But it’s grandma and grandpa who grew old together.”

She talked about how her grandpa stepped up during her grandma’s toughest times. He learned to cook, clean, and did laundry while she had six chemotherapy sessions. The most touching part? He held her hand, went to every doctor’s visit with her, and made sure she was never alone, even if it was just for a few minutes.

Emily shared that the hospital staff often talked about her grandpa’s dedication to her grandma. Everyone loved seeing their bond. He was with her every day, whether she was in the hospital or hospice. Emily remembered how he always held her hand, gave her forehead kisses, and cherished every moment they had together.

Emily observed that every time her grandfather thought his wife might be in pain or discomfort, his eyes teared up. Despite her grandmother experiencing multiple strokes and becoming frail, he never stopped telling her how beautiful she was every day.

“They had that kind of forever love, the love we all aspire for,” Emily wrote. They would have been married 60 years next month, and yet, 60 years still wouldn’t have been enough.” The last words her grandfather said to her grandmother were, “Oh you’re so precious, goodnight my honey.”

Emily shared that her grandparents first met in their 20s at a cycling club in England. But the most significant journey they took was their life together, which she described as “the most important race together.” She said, “They won the greatest race of all, a life full of love.” Emily felt blessed to witness and capture one of their last special moments together.
