There are times when folks don’t treat their wedding promises as important. But Delta Burke and Gerald McRaney aren’t like that. They’ve been happily married for over 30 years!
Gerald McRaney, when he first saw Delta Burke, who’s an actress, knew he wanted to go on a date with her. But, he also knew many other guys liked her too. He didn’t want to lose her to someone else. So, when he finally asked her on a date, he did it quickly because there were other people who wanted to date her too.
When Gerald McRaney first met Delta Burke, he felt a really strong bond. On their second date, he even asked her to be his wife! But they didn’t get married right away. They waited two years and finally got married on May 28, 1989.
Even though it took longer than Gerald hoped, he was really happy because he married his dream girl! For Delta, this was her first time getting married. But for Gerald, this was his third marriage. However, this time he was super serious about making it work forever.
Gerald McRaney and Delta Burke were really in love. But, some of Gerald’s friends didn’t think they should get married. Gerald didn’t listen to them though. He felt that because they both worked in movies and TV, they understood each other better. For example, if he was filming somewhere and couldn’t call her until late at night, she didn’t mind because she knew what his work was like.
The two of them also help each other out. They give advice when the other person has a problem with work. And, they cheer for each other when they do well. For example, when Gerald won a big award for his acting in the show “This Is Us”, Delta was his number one fan. She was so happy for him that she cried while she cheered him on!
Gerald McRaney said that of all the people who give him advice about his acting, he listens to Delta Burke the most. If she tells him his acting is good or that it needs to get better, he knows she’s telling the truth.
In 1998, their marriage was put to the test. Delta lost her grandma and her mom was told she had breast cancer. Around the same time, Delta took a break from her acting job because she had a disagreement with the people who made her show, “Designing Women.”
People who watched the show noticed that Delta was getting bigger. The reason was that she was dealing with a health problem called hypoglycemia, which made her gain weight.
Delta Burke had a tough time with her weight. Because her hypoglycemia wasn’t treated well, and she was dieting a lot, she got type 2 diabetes. She had to go to many different doctors before she could find out what was wrong.
Delta remembers how she felt really tired and something didn’t feel right with her body. She was sure something was wrong, but the doctors couldn’t figure out what it was. They told her she had a sickness called Epstein-Barr. But she knew it was something else. Then, a doctor finally did the right tests and told her she had diabetes.
At that time, she was also taking care of her mom and wasn’t taking good care of herself. She was taking medicine for her diabetes, but her doctor told her she needed to eat healthier food. If she didn’t, she would need to start taking insulin.
After a really hard time, Delta’s mom got better. Delta was really happy with how Gerald helped her during this time. He made sure she took her medicine and always looked after her. Gerald also fought off lung cancer in 2004.
Now, Delta uses insulin for her diabetes and says Gerald helps her a lot, including giving her insulin shots. She shared, “He loved me when I got as big as a house… He has loved me through my up times and my down times. He still thinks my body looks great, and I can certifiably tell you it does not!”
They both stay active and take care of their health. Delta says she finally feels good about her health!
Delta Burke doesn’t plan on going back to acting right now. Gerald McRaney also thinks she probably won’t act again, but he says he would really like to work with her again!
Even though Gerald isn’t planning on retiring, they both bought a house in the middle of Florida and they plan to move there soon. They don’t have kids together, but they spent their lives raising Gerald’s three kids from his previous marriage.
