How Prince William and Kate Middleton are raising their children to be grounded and kind

The royal couple is committed to teaching Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis valuable life lessons

Prince William and Kate Middleton have made it their mission to raise their children with strong values, despite their royal status. From banning tablets to teaching them about real-world issues, the Prince and Princess of Wales are ensuring that Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis grow up grounded, kind, and aware of the world beyond the palace walls.

Since moving from Kensington Palace to Adelaide Cottage in Windsor in 2022, Prince William and Kate Middleton have prioritized giving their children as normal an upbringing as possible. They believe in discipline, structure, and important life lessons, but also in fostering an environment where their children feel loved and valued.

One of their key parenting rules is that shouting is strictly forbidden. If one of the children raises their voice, the conversation ends immediately, and they are calmly spoken to about their behavior. According to a source who spoke to The Sun, this ensures that George, Charlotte, and Louis learn emotional intelligence and healthy ways of expressing their feelings.

Teaching compassion and awareness

Prince William is carrying on a lesson he learned from his late mother, Princess Diana: the importance of compassion. Diana introduced William and his brother, Prince Harry, to the realities of homelessness when they were young, and now William is doing the same with his children.

“My mother introduced me to the cause of homelessness from quite a young age, and I’m really glad she did,” William said in an interview with The Sunday Times. He often talks to his children about the people they see on the streets and why they may need help.

Royal expert Katie Nicholl believes this hands-on approach will help shape the young royals into empathetic and responsible individuals. “William and Kate’s children are probably more aware of homelessness than most children from privileged backgrounds,” she told OK! magazine.

Learning how to lose gracefully

Beyond teaching them about the real world, William and Kate also believe in the importance of learning how to lose.

In today’s world, where children are often shielded from failure, William has emphasized that his kids should understand that losing is part of life.

“I think it’s really important from a young age to understand how to lose, and why we lose, and to grow from it,” William said. He believes that knowing how to handle losses will help them in relationships, friendships, and even future careers.

Avoiding the “spare” problem for Prince Louis

While Prince George is next in line for the throne, his younger siblings—Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis—will not have the same direct royal responsibilities. Royal expert Jennie Bond believes William and Kate are well aware of the challenges this could bring, especially for Louis.

In his memoir Spare, Prince Harry expressed concerns that his nephew, Prince Louis, might grow up feeling like an outsider in the royal family, just as he did. But Bond believes William and Kate are taking steps to ensure all their children feel equally valued.

“They will encourage Louis to explore life outside the royal fold,” Bond told The Mirror. Whether that means a career in the military, charity work, or another field, the goal is for Louis to find a meaningful role that suits him.

A firm stance on technology

Despite being part of a generation raised on digital devices, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis do not have unlimited access to screens. William and Kate have banned tablets in their household, choosing instead to encourage creative play and outdoor activities.

“They’re very much seen as mummy and daddy’s toys, not for children,” a source told Us Weekly. Instead of relying on screens for entertainment, the royal children are encouraged to play, read, and engage in imaginative activities.

However, William and Kate are concerned about their children growing up in a digital age. Former royal aide Jason Knauf revealed that the couple worries about the effects of social media and mobile phones on young minds.

“His childhood in front of the media was quite difficult at times,” Knauf said, referring to William’s own experiences. “He knew that he was going to be raising his kids to deal with social media and mobile phones.”

Advocating for a safer online world

Prince William has been outspoken about the dangers of social media, particularly cyberbullying. In a speech to the BBC in 2018, he emphasized the lack of guidance for parents navigating this new digital landscape.

“For too many families, phones and social media have shattered the sanctity and protection of the home,” he said. He also urged tech companies to take greater responsibility for ensuring children’s safety online.

A modern royal upbringing

Prince William and Kate Middleton are determined to raise their children to be respectful, kind, and aware of the world around them. Whether it’s banning screens, teaching them about homelessness, or ensuring they know how to handle failure, the future King and Queen Consort are shaping the next generation of royals with a modern, thoughtful approach.
