Born in London in 1951, Phil’s life was always surrounded by creativity. His mother, a talent manager, and his father, an insurance agent, fostered a home brimming with artistic energy. Phil’s passion for music was evident from an early age.

At just three, he received his first drum, and by five, he had a custom-made drum kit. This early love for rhythm led him to perform at local shows and even explore acting.

Phil’s career took a decisive turn when he joined Genesis in 1970, initially as a drummer and backup vocalist. His talent soon propelled him to the forefront as the lead singer, a role he embraced despite initial reservations. Under his leadership, Genesis evolved from progressive rock to a more pop-rock sound, achieving widespread success with hits like “Follow You Follow Me” and the album “Duke.”

Parallel to his work with Genesis, Phil launched a successful solo career. His first album in 1981 featured the iconic “In The Air Tonight,” and he continued to produce hits like “You Can’t Hurry Love” and “I Don’t Care Anymore.” His unique style, blending rock with R&B influences, set him apart in the music industry.

Despite his immense success, Phil’s personal life had its ups and downs. He experienced three marriages and often expressed his emotions through his music. His song “In The Air Tonight,” for instance, reflected his feelings about his first divorce.

In 1996, Phil left Genesis to explore new musical avenues, focusing on solo projects and film music. He also dabbled in production, working with artists like Anni-Frid Lyngstad from ABBA. His contributions to music have been recognized with six Grammy Awards, and he’s one of the few artists to sell over 100 million albums both solo and in a band.

In 2015, Genesis reunited, announcing a UK tour. However, due to Phil’s health issues, his son Nicholas took over the drumming responsibilities. Phil acknowledges that this might be his last tour, emphasizing the importance of health over fame.
