Young mom delivers genetically identical triplets—beats 1 in 200 million odds

1998

Becki-Jo Allen and her little girl Indiana reside in a peaceful place near Liverpool, England.

One day, Becki-Jo started feeling sick and guessed that she might be pregnant again. She was correct, and to her amazement, she was pregnant with three babies!

But the surprises did not end there. During delivery, an even more unexpected event occurred. This occurrence is so uncommon that the likelihood of it happening is as low as 200 million to 1.

“I had been being very sick and had a really bad headache so I booked an early scan and that was when I found out I was expecting triplets. It was the biggest shock of my life!” Becki-Jo told the Liverpool Echo “We haven’t got any triplets in the family so it came completely out of the blue.”

The mother was surprised but happy to hear the news that she was going to have three more children, making Indiana a big sister. Becki-Jo received lots of support from her loved ones and prepared herself mentally for the challenge of giving birth to three children.

However, when Becki-Jo was in her 31st week of pregnancy, she had to go to the hospital quickly because of complications. There, she delivered her triplets via a Caesarean section. Because they were born prematurely, they were very small. Rocco, the smallest of the three, weighed only 3.3 pounds, and his brothers were only slightly heavier.

Due to their small size, all three babies had to stay in intensive care for six weeks.

It’s uncommon for all three babies to survive in a triplet pregnancy due to the high level of risk involved. But in Becki-Jo’s case, all three of her babies fought and managed to survive.

They were able to gain weight and become stronger every day during their stay in the hospital. Finally, after spending about 1.5 months in the hospital, the boys were able to leave and go home. However, even though Becki-Jo had difficulty telling them apart, she had a strong feeling that her boys were not identical.

As the three brothers got older, it became difficult for people to tell them apart. Even strangers would approach their mother, Becki-Jo, on the street just to ask who was who. To solve the mystery, Becki-Jo reached out to a laboratory to perform DNA tests on the triplets. The results showed that the brothers were genetically identical, which is a rare occurrence with odds as low as one in 200 million. While the chances of triplets being born have gone up with the help of medical technology, having genetically identical triplets is still very uncommon.

“We don’t get anywhere fast because people are always stopping us when we’re out and asking if they are identical.

“I was always convinced they weren’t, because that’s what I had been told during my pregnancy.”

As expected, the family uses a lot of resources. Becki-Jo mentioned that the washing machine is being used almost all the time. Also, it’s noticeable how much the children have grown.
