Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell first crossed paths on the set of “The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band” in 1966. Reflecting on their initial meeting during a BBC Radio 4 interview, Goldie said, “I was 21 and he was 16. I thought he was adorable, but he was much too young. Then, years later we met up again, and I remembered that I liked him very much when I first met him. We both said we would never go out with another actor so it just shows you never can tell.”
Although they weren’t ready to start a relationship initially, Goldie Hawn was facing personal challenges that many weren’t aware of. Even as she appeared joyful to the world, she secretly battled with depression. During an appearance on “Good Morning Britain,” Hawn opened up about her mental health struggles, revealing that they began in her early twenties. “When I was young, I became depressed. I was 21 and I was rising to success,” she shared.
Despite the allure of fame, Goldie Hawn found the spotlight challenging, remarking, “I know it sounds terrible, but it’s a very, very difficult thing, I didn’t necessarily want that.” In her personal life, she married actor Gus Trikonis in 1969, but they parted ways after four years. By June 1976, she divorced and soon tied the knot with Bill Hudson, a union that lasted six years. Fate brought her and Russell back together in 1983 on the set of “Swing Shift.”

During their reunion on the set of “Swing Shift”, Russell, taken by Hawn’s appearance, blurted out, “Man, you’ve got a great figure.” Reflecting on this in a 2017 chat with Conan O’Brien, Russell admitted, “I was severely hungover and I didn’t know Goldie at all outside of having worked with her those many years before,” Russell said in a 2017 interview with Conan O’Brien. “I just didn’t have in my mind what I was going to see, and she had a great body.” While such a remark might not always land well, Goldie graciously responded with, “Why thank you.”
Goldie had two children with Bill Hudson before she began her long-lasting relationship with Kurt Russell: her son, Oliver, born on September 7, 1976, and her daughter, Kate, born on April 19, 1979. Despite being together for 40 years, Kurt and Goldie have chosen not to marry. Kurt explained their perspective to People magazine, saying, “For people like us, the marriage certificate wasn’t going to create anything that otherwise we wouldn’t have. I don’t know – 40 years isn’t enough to finally say, ‘Well I guess…’”

Hawn shared her thoughts on marriage and relationships, pointing out that while some family members have married, it’s not always the key to happiness. “Our children got married … Oliver’s very happily married and Wyatt’s very happily married. Katie got married once and that didn’t work, and she’s with this most amazing human and I don’t know if she’ll marry again. The point is that we all tried marriage and sometimes marriage doesn’t work. It’s not about the marriage. It’s about the people and the relationship, and the will to stay together. And that’s a big one because if you want it, you can have it. You’ve got to give things up, but the joy and the excitement of being together and touching the toes of somebody at night is really a nice feeling.”
For fans of this iconic couple and their inspiring journey, it’s a story worth sharing with loved ones.
