Lauren Chapin, ‘Father Knows Best’ child star who became a voice for survivors, dies at 80
The actress who played Kathy “Kitten” Anderson died February 24, 2026, after a five-year battle with cancer. She was known not only for her iconic role, but for her courage in speaking out about abuse and addiction.
Lauren Chapin, the child actress who charmed a generation as the youngest Anderson sibling on the beloved 1950s sitcom Father Knows Best, died Tuesday, February 24, 2026, after a five-year battle with cancer. She was 80.
Her son Matthew announced the news on Facebook: “After a long hard-fought battle over the past 5 years, the time has come. My mother Lauren Chapin passed away from her battle with cancer tonight. I’m at a complete loss for words right now. Please keep my sister and family in your thoughts and prayers as we go through this incredibly tough time.”
Fellow actress Erin Murphy also paid tribute online, sharing photos of the two across the years and reflecting on the lasting bond between former child stars of that golden era.
From Los Angeles to Living Rooms Nationwide
Born in Los Angeles on May 23, 1945, Lauren came from a performing family. Her brothers Billy Chapin and Michael Chapin were both child actors — Billy appeared in The Night of the Hunter (1955) and Michael in It’s a Wonderful Life (1946). Lauren made her screen debut in the Judy Garland film A Star Is Born (1954) and appeared on CBS’s Lux Video Theatre before landing the role that would define her childhood.

She was nine years old when she was cast as Kathy “Kitten” Anderson on Father Knows Best, chosen from roughly 250 girls after multiple callbacks and screen tests. She was selected in part because of a striking resemblance to one of star Robert Young’s own daughters, also named Kathy.
The show ran for six seasons on CBS and NBC from October 1954 through May 1960, with Chapin appearing in 196 of the 203 episodes. For her performance, Chapin earned five Junior Emmy Awards for Best Child Actress.
She warmly remembered her co-star Robert Young as “just like a real father,” a sentiment that carried particular weight given what was happening in her life off-screen.
A Difficult Life Behind the Camera
Even as Kitten Anderson embodied safety and warmth for millions of viewers, Lauren Chapin’s own childhood was marked by serious trauma. In her 1989 memoir, Father Does Know Best: The Lauren Chapin Story, she revealed that she was sexually abused by her father and a family friend during the years she was a household name.

“It was very difficult to understand how Kathy Anderson could be loved and protected and Lauren Chapin lived a whole different kind of life,” she said during a 1989 appearance on Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee.
After the show ended, her personal life unraveled quickly. She was married and divorced by 19 and struggled with heroin addiction, which she said lasted until age 25, as well as jail sentences and multiple miscarriages.
Recovery, Faith, and a Second Act
After achieving sobriety, Chapin rebuilt her life through faith, ministry, and advocacy. She became an ordained evangelist and a sought-after speaker, appearing on The Today Show, Entertainment Tonight, and The Oprah Winfrey Show to share her story of survival and recovery.
She wrote two books and helped raise more than $2 million for underprivileged and abused children through charity work. She also managed artists, including her daughter, Latin pop singer Summer Healy-Chapin.
She never distanced herself from her most famous role, reuniting with the Father Knows Best cast for two TV reunion movies in 1977 and appearing at nostalgia conventions for decades.
Lauren Chapin is survived by her son Matthew, her daughter Summer, and her brother Michael Chapin. She was preceded in death by her brother Billy Chapin, who died in 2016.
