Rare childhood photos of Meghan Markle reveal early signs of ambition and courage
Never-before-seen pictures from Meghan and Harry’s Netflix series shine a light on the Duchess’s early years and personal journey
New photos of Meghan Markle as a child have emerged in the couple’s Netflix docuseries, offering a deeper look into the future Duchess’s early life, values, and ambitions. These intimate images reveal the roots of Meghan’s strong character—long before she became a royal.
Meghan Markle was born on August 4, 1981, in Los Angeles, California. Her childhood was split between two very different environments. At home and school, she lived a traditional life—attending Immaculate Heart High School, an all-girls Catholic school. But after school, she would join her father, Thomas Markle, a lighting director in Hollywood, on television sets.

In an interview, Meghan once described how strange it was to spend afternoons on the set of Married… with Children while still wearing her school uniform. “It was a really funny and perverse place for a little girl in a Catholic school uniform to grow up,” she said, noting how her dad would often steer her away from scenes not meant for young eyes.
These behind-the-scenes moments helped spark her interest in acting—but they also made her aware of gender roles and social issues early on.
One of Meghan’s earliest moments of activism came at age 11. After seeing a TV commercial that said, “Women all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans,” she felt it unfairly placed all responsibility on mothers. Meghan didn’t just complain—she took action.

With help from her father, she wrote letters to powerful figures, including then-First Lady Hillary Clinton. Shortly after, the company changed its ad to say “People all over America.” It was a big win for a little girl, and a sign of the strong, outspoken woman she’d become.
Though Meghan once considered a career in politics, she followed her passion for storytelling. She studied theater and international relations at Northwestern University and interned at the U.S. Embassy in Argentina. After college, she auditioned for acting roles while taking on small gigs—most notably as a “briefcase girl” on Deal or No Deal.
She later joked about her time on the show, saying, “I was the ill-fated number 26… standing there forever in uncomfortable five-inch heels.” But her big break came in 2011 when she was cast as Rachel Zane in the hit legal drama Suits.

Before her royal life, Meghan was married to film producer Trevor Engelson. They dated for seven years and married in 2011 in Jamaica. But just two years later, while Suits was at its peak and Meghan was living in Toronto, the couple quietly divorced.
Biographer Andrew Morton noted that the long distance strained their relationship, and that Meghan, focused on building a new life and career, eventually sent back her wedding rings by mail. Though painful, it marked another turning point in her personal evolution.
In 2018, Meghan married Prince Harry and entered a centuries-old institution with strict expectations. But her past—divorced, American, biracial, and a former actress—wasn’t exactly a match made in Buckingham Palace.

Although the royal family has slowly adapted to modern times, tradition still holds strong. Historically, remarriage after divorce was frowned upon, especially among senior royals. For Meghan, the scrutiny was intense from the beginning.
And yet, she and Harry chose to step away from royal life, openly speaking about the pressures they faced. Their Netflix documentary, released in late 2022, showcases their journey in their own words, including rare photos from their past.
The docuseries includes precious, previously unseen photos of Meghan as a child—hugging her mother Doria Ragland, playing in a yellow sweater, or wearing a school uniform with a big smile. In one photo, a young Meghan wears light makeup, hinting at her early curiosity about identity and presentation. Another shows her in a blue collared shirt with thick, dark curls.

These candid images don’t just add depth to Meghan’s story—they make it more relatable. They show a girl with big dreams, a strong voice, and a heart full of hope.
While Meghan Markle’s royal journey has often been covered in headlines, these personal snapshots and stories paint a different picture—one of resilience, curiosity, and transformation.
In the end, these new glimpses remind us that behind the royal titles and media drama is a woman who started out like many of us—navigating family, school, dreams, and heartbreak.
What we see now is not just a duchess, but a human being shaped by both light and shadow.
